Gymboree Play & Music Coupon for Las Vegas Locals!

When Shane was 10 months old, we bought a house. One of the first things that I did was check out what baby/toddler activities were nearby. I found that there was a Gymboree Play & Music nearby so I scheduled a preview class just to see what it was all about. We instantly fell in love with the program and Shane took classes there for a long time. In fact, that’s where we met the other kiddos in Shane’s playgroup that we still meet up with every week!

Have you ever been to Gymboree?

It’s Either Feast or Famine.

Ever notice how you either have nothing going on or EVERYTHING all at once?

For the last seven months, I’ve been doing pretty much the same thing all the time. I was preparing meals, cleaning house, blogging, taking Shane places six days a week & working the seventh day {first a play teacher, then an art teacher} at Gymboree. While I’m always busy doing something, it’s been fairly low-key. For the last three months, I was literally working four hours a week.

Shane at Gymboree, 13 months old {Sept 2010}

All of a sudden, this week, I have a whole new life in front of me. I’m still going to be preparing meals, cleaning house, blogging & taking Shane places, but a few things have changed:

-Saturday, I taught my last class. I was really sad to leave, but:

-I start an internship today. It’s paid &I will be working 20 hours a week, making twice as much per hour as I did as a teacher. It was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. The internship is in social media, which is even better, and is 8 weeks long. AND,

-I am going back to my old job part-time starting the first week of August. This is something that look a lot of thought &consideration since it is a long-term thing & not 8 weeks long like the internship, but ultimately it is the decision I had to make for my family. The money will be helpful & beyond that, we are considering buying a portion of the company in the future {Hubby works for the same company} &so if that happens, it will be good for me to be up-to-date on what’s going on and how to do everything. I worked there for three years but I quit when I was eight months pregnant, almost two years ago to the day. So it’ll be weird to be back but in a way it’s like I just took an extended maternity leave.

Me at my old {-and-now-new-again} desk, circa 2006

One thing that I am really struggling with is that I will be leaving Shane with other people so much. Luckily, the internship is work-from-home, but the job is not. I will only be working three days a week, and Shane will likely be with my mother-in-law {who is absolutely obsessed with him} on those days, but I am still saddened by it. But I try to remember that I have been very fortunate to be able to stay home with him as long as I have, and that he’ll be just fine without me hovering over his shoulder, pointing out every letter, number, and shape we see.

The other thing that I’m apprehensive about is that I just know I’m going to start falling behind on things. Already I haven’t been blogging as much, because of course when moms are pressed for time we tend to give up our hobbies rather than delegating laundry & dish duty, am I right? However, I’m determined to not let that continue & in fact over the next couple of weeks I am rolling out some fun new features that I hope you like.

But even beyond blogging, I am wondering how I am going to get everything done, especially when August comes around & I’m working AND doing the internship: dishes, laundry, bathtime, bedtime, learning, meals, packing lunches, organizing, vacuuming, grocery shopping, etc. will all need to be done; I looked into it & unfortunately, there are still only 24 hours in a day. So Hubby has been informed that I will need help, but it’s going to take some getting used to and a new routine to go with it.

But I like my routine. So I’m kind of anxious. But I know what an amazing opportunity this internship is and what a great job I’m going back to {the paperwork & filing I could do without but the people, environment & flexibility are stellar} and so that’s helping to keep me going.

Change is hard, but it’s the only constant.

Anyway, I’m not going anywhere- in fact, life’s about to get a lot more blogworthy!

Susie’s Note: By the way, quitting Gymboree to go back to my old job is the “secret” I couldn’t discuss in this post, since it wasn’t for sure yet & I wanted my Gymboree boss to know I was leaving before the internet found out.

Something Old turns into Something New

Thank you to P&G’s Have You Tried This Yet? program and Kroger for sponsoring my writing about trying new things and breaking out of my everyday routine. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

When Clever Girls Collective & Kroger asked me to write about something new I’ve tried, I realized- I haven’t really tried anything new in awhile.

Boring.

Granted, next week I’m going on a week long vacation to a ski resort {I don’t ski} with Shane {who has never gone on vacation} and we’re driving there {and it’s a 12 hour drive}. So… that’ll be new!

But it hasn’t happened yet so I can’t really talk about it quite yet. So I thought about the last time I tried something new that drastically changed my life & came up with when I applied for Gymboree in November!

I had been taking Shane to Gymboree since July, when he was 11 months old. He and I both loved it- we loved the “mommy friends” & playmates we met, we loved the structure of the classes, &we loved going to Open Play Gym to make the most of our monthly fee. So one day when I was feeling bad about not making any money for the household, I started perusing Craigslist. You can imagine my surprise when I found out that they were hiring! But only in a group interview on a Tuesday when my mother-in-law worked & I wouldn’t have a babysitter. Drats.

I tried for three days to figure out a plan so I could go to the interview but had no luck. So on the day of the interview I took Shane to one of our friends’ houses to play with her son, who we had met at Gymboree. I mentioned- with no intention of it being a “hint”, I promise- that I was upset to be missing the interview. She basically told me I’d be a great teacher & to go while she watched Shane.

…That’s how I know she’s a good great friend.

Anyway, it was scary having to interview, especially since I knew the owner from attending classes & I knew it’d be a little bit awkward if she didn’t hire me. That & the fact that I’ve never had to “interview” for a job before had me shaking in my socks.

Two days later when I got a call-back for a one-on-one interview, I was ecstatic. I was even happier when I went to that interview on the day before Thanksgiving & was told I was hired. Score!

Now, the job doesn’t exactly make enough to support a family of three since it’s super part-time, but I mainly work there because I love it.

I love teaching little ones new concepts and helping them realize they can do things- last week a 9-month-old imitated what I showed him & his mom started crying; apparently he had never imitated anyone before and she was so happy.

I love walking in with Shane & having my “students” come up to play with me as well, not realizing “Shane’s Mom” and “Miss Shell” are basically two different people.

&I love the look in the kids’ eyes when I pull out Gymbo the clown or sing a familiar song or start blowing bubbles- that look that says “This made my week. Thank you.”

So maybe this week-long trip will be okay. After all, the last time I tried something new it turned out pretty darn awesome.

Susie’s Note:
I was compensated for writing this post but it’s all true, obv. I blogged about it while it happened. :)

Tuesday Tips: How to Sneak Learning into Play

So, it’s no secret that I work at Gymboree, the “Global Leader in Classes for Kids”. I applied to be a teacher there after I’d been taking Shane to classes for six months. I liked it so much, I just had to be a part of it. Hubby, on the other hand, thought it was a glorified playdate that cost us a monthly subscription.

But Gymboree’s philosophy is similar to mine when it comes to play & learning: The two can- and should- coexist. Yes, the kids are having a ton of fun rolling balls down slides, singing silly songs like the Noble Duke of York, and jumping onto giant cushions. But while doing that, they are learning that balls can go from up to down the slide; that the Noble Duke of York went up, down, left & right; and that they can jump down onto a big orange cushion. They are learning while they have fun & as teachers and as parents we are allowing them to explore how they learn best.

So like I said, this is a philosophy that I share with Gymboree. I have been sneaking education into Shane’s playing since he was able to play. I’m sure you do the same with your children, but I wanted to share some of the fun ways that Shane & I do this so that maybe you can pick up a new idea or two.

1.) Bath time. In the bath, Shane has a whole aresenal of toys. He has ducks, which we count when we sing the “Four little ducks” song, he has other squirt animals, which is how he learned to pinch his fingers together like a crab, and he has his favorite- bathtub crayons. We use these to draw animals, numbers, letters, body parts & even the names of our family members. Shane just thinks it’s awesome that he gets to draw on the wall; I think it’s awesome that he can tell that the squiggles I draw are supposed to be monkeys & lions. Or was it squirrels & giraffes? Eh.

2.) Storytime. It started simply enough- we’d read board books that are simple to add lessons in to. His favorite book is “My Nose, My Toes and Me” &it has become a nightly routine that Daddy reads it out loud with Shane on his lap & I act out the body parts being named. Now Shane is capable of pointing to each body part- often even before we say it out loud. The other day I also read him Dumbo- and I asked him questions relevant to the story. He managed to tell me what a mouse, bird and elephant say, showed me where you could find his ears, and did a fake laugh along with me when I imitated the other elephants &kids laughing at Dumbo’s ears. Shane loves reading stories & I love that not only can stories reiterate things he’s learned in other ways but can put a bunch of concepts together and allow us to communicate with each other.

3.) TV time. Yes, I am one of “those moms” that lets her kid watch tv. It’s 2011, it’s not like he’s never going to watch tv. Anyway, when he watches tv, I ask him questions about what he sees {“What is Blue’s Clue? It’s a bird, what does a bird say? What color is that bird?”}.

4.) Music. Shane LOVES music. For awhile he didn’t really care but lately he’s got to have music all.the.time. I don’t mind of course, but I can hardly play Eminem or even Katy Perry for him with a good conscience. I got a CD for him that we play at Gymboree {Kids in Motion}& he is in LOVE with it. In addition to being exposed to the obvious {rhythm, beat, tempo, etc.} he has also learned stop & go from “The Freeze”, different animal songs from “Animal Action” I & II, and even counting from “The Countbounce Countdown” {He shows me the fingers for 1 & 2 during the song, on cue & everything!}

So basically, I try to take anything & everything that Shane & I do and turn it into a learning experience somehow. There’s no need to sacrifice fun to be smart though, and you can sneak a lesson into even the silliest of activities!

What’s a way you’ve snuck learning into a fun activity? Do you need/want ideas for how to add learning into a fun thing you do? Leave a comment!
