Give the Gift of a Great Future with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America!

One of my goals as a mother is to make sure that I raise a child who is compassionate toward others. I want to raise a son who not only cares about people, but actively helps them however he can. And part of that starts with teaching him now that there are others out there who need our help, and showing him how we can help them.

give your kids gift

This season, Boys & Girls Clubs of America has put together a great list of ways to teach your kids about giving back. They range from small actions like just talking about giving to bigger ways like volunteering together or baking for a senior center. They’re all great ideas & while Shane is still a bit too young for a few of them, we’re working on implementing all of the tips that he can handle.

the giving game

Another way that we’re focusing on giving back this season is by playing the Giving Game on the Boys & Girls Club website! Shane loved helping me play this game- it’s a virtual version of the old “Which cup is the ball under?” game but in this case, it asks you to “Follow Your Heart”. If you find it, you win a prize for a child in the Boys & Girls Club- and it doesn’t cost you anything. I won a plantable bookmark for a child somewhere, and imagining them planting that bookmark, watering it & watching it grow makes me smile.

Once you’re done with the game, you can donate with the Give the Gift of a Great Future program. Not only can you donate directly from the BGCA website, but you can shop through their partners & make a donation while purchasing through them! I am planning on gifting myself some new Uggs after Christmas and I love that with each pair of limited edition kids’ puzzle boots purchased before Jan. 6, UGG will donate $10 to Boys & Girls Clubs affected by Sandy. Don’t have extra cash to spare? You can sign up with their partner SurveyMonkey Contribute to take opinion surveys. For every survey you answer, SurveyMonkey will donate $0.50 to BGCA!

Boys & Girls Clubs of America wants to teach their members to give back too, and that’s why they are hosting a Kids Give Back contest! Club kids have given over 1 million hours of community service in 2012 alone, so the contest highlights some of these amazing service projects. The winning one will receive a $2,500 grant from BGCA! That’s a pretty awesome holiday gift.

gift of giving

If you’re looking for easy ways to give back this season, consider giving to the Boys & Girls Clubs. They do so much for children everywhere & need our help to do it. I personally donated after playing The Giving Game & next year I hope to give more!

Holiday Gift Guide: Monkeez Makes a Difference

I love gifts that give back, and even more, I like gifts that allow the recipient to give back as well. I especially love when those gifts are cute & cuddly knit plush animals that kids love that also teach them a lesson about giving.

The Monkeez & Friends line “Monkeez Makes a Difference” are stuffed animals that do just that. They have over 90 animals, including monkeys, dogs, bears, and even off-beat animals like a cow & an octopus in various sizes.

Each specially marked character comes with a unique activation code that the child can use online to donate to one of three charities of their choice: Alex’s Lemonade Stand, Best Friends Animal Society, or Samaritan’s Purse. Once the child makes their choice, Monkeez & Friends donates 10% of the wholesale cost of the character they received to their chosen charity. It doesn’t cost the gift-giver any extra, and it allows the child to be involved in the donation- and I definitely consider that to be a win-win.

The code that they get also unlocks a virtual world where they can play educational games & even learn more about how they can help people in need. It turns their adorable stuffed animal into an interactive experience that continues to teach them long after they’ve given their new friend it’s first hug.

&They have something for everyone- they also have pet toys {Bella has a squeak toy from them & absolutely loves it!} and "Do Good" trading cards that teach your children small things that they can do to make the world a better place.

{Not Quite} Wordless Wednesday: Magical Forest

A couple of weeks ago, we headed to the Magical Forest, a local Christmas event put on my Opportunity Village every year. I’ve gone to it almost every year since I was a little kid {and even had a choir concert there in 5th grade} so it’s always such a special tradition for us!

The first stop was for some funnel cake for Justin & I to share- I get it every year! It’s as much a tradition as going there in the first place.

Shane chose a Gingerbread Lady instead.

They always have beautiful displays- like this Cinderella-esque carriage!

Shane is obsessed with Nutcrackers this year, so he loved these guys!

&Of course, he loved the stuffed animals reading The Night Before Christmas!

I thought this little guy was hilarious!

welcome to the fabulous north pole
What, you didn’t know the North Pole was in Vegas?

I love Magical Forest because it’s a family tradition & fills us with Christmas spirit, but I also love that all proceeds benefit people with disabilities at Opportunity Village. It’s a win-win & we plan on continuing to attend every year!

If you live in Las Vegas, be sure to check out Magical Forest! It’s open through January 6- find hours, promotions & location here.

Note: My family received tickets to attend the event this year but all experiences are authentic & all opinions are my own!

Start Healthy Habits Early with the Boys & Girls Clubs!

I have always been obsessed with food & nutrition. I took a nutrition class as an elective in high school and took it as my science class in college- and that was one of the only classes I’ve ever taken where I actually read the textbook pretty much cover to cover. It just fascinates me how our choices can so deeply affect our bodies and cause and prevent so many issues!

That said, I do not always eat what I should. I don’t have an all-junk-food diet, but it’s also not an all-health-food diet. I wish I could go full out & drink kale smoothies for breakfast but old habits die hard, and when I was a kid, I didn’t eat well at all. So while I eat way better now than I ever have- it’s hard to relearn how to eat.

That’s why the Boys & Girls Clubs of America have partnered with Amway to teach kids how to eat well right off the bat. They have taken a three-part approach to making sure that the kids in their program get a great head start on nutrition for the rest of their lives, including:

-POSITIVE SPROUTS Sustainability Grants: Amway is providing $30,000 in grants to 10 deserving Boys & Girls Clubs who previously received community gardens from Amway. The funds are meant to assist Clubs with the maintenance for their garden as well as improve the nutrition of the Club members.

-Garden in a Box Kits: Amway is donating 150 Garden in a Box kits to Boys & Girls Clubs who showed an interest & need for establishing a community gardening program at their Club. The kit includes fruit & vegetable seeds and supplies to get started.

-POSITIVE SPROUTS Curriculum: Amway is delivering a healthy food curriculum to 4,000 Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide to make sure that all Clubs have access to educational materials promoting healthy eating habits.

I think it’s wonderful when anyone steps in to help kids learn about nutrition. It’s so much easier to maintain an established healthy lifestyle than start one from scratch so I hope that these kids get a great head start with living healthy lives!

Teaching My Child About Giving with Operation Christmas Child

This month, many of us have been thinking about what we are grateful for. My list is very long, but at the top is the fact that I have a loving family, and that Justin & I can provide whatever Shane needs. So many children in this country don’t get what they deserve- and not at the fault of their families. It’s just that so many families right now are struggling, between lay-offs and cut hours and reduced pay; between climbing costs for food and clothing and even utilities. So while I’m scouring for the best deal on the season’s hottest toys for Shane, I know that all around me, there are parents just trying to scrape up enough money to ensure that there is one present for their child under the tree.

Because I review toys, Shane does get more toys than most children. This makes it even more important to me to make sure that he understands that there are other children out there who have so little. I donate clothing & toys year-round, and briefly discuss what I am doing with him, but he’s never really participated, only listened. So when I learned about Operation Christmas Child, I knew that this would be the perfect way to get him involved.

Operation Christmas Child is a program that collects shoebox gifts and distributes them to families in need all around the world. Anyone can get involved, and it’s easy!

1. Choose a recipient: Decide if you want to give your gift to a child that is 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 and whether you want to give to a boy or a girl. {You can also do as many boxes as you’d like.}

2. Fill it up: Go to the website to download and print the instructions and labels needed to complete your box. They have a list of good gift ideas- and remember, everything has to be able to fit into a shoebox! {Although you’d be surprised by how much you can fit!}

3. Send it Off: They have several drop-off locations- collection week is this week but you can also send it in. Once you’ve packed and dropped off your shoebox, you can donate $7 online to follow your box donation and see where it goes!

Shane & I went to Target to find some great items to include. I let Shane help me choose what to give, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well he did with giving the toys away. I thought that he would want to keep everything or that he would ask for things for himself, but he actually got very excited about helping me choose gifts. Instead of asking me to buy him a toy, he would ask me to get it for the little boy our box was for. It really warmed my heart.

Once we had our gifts home, Shane couldn’t wait to put it together! I wrapped the box up & Shane helped me put everything inside. He was smiling the whole time, knowing that he was going to be making another little boy’s Christmas a happy one.

This holiday season build a box with your family to teach kindness, compassion, and generosity.

Operation Christmas Child and influencer marketing platform BlogFrog have teamed up with 200 bloggers like me to spread the word about this great cause.

BlogFrog will match the first 200 boxes that are built.  Pledge your commitment below to build a box today on Facebook or Twitter!
