I love getting the kids into the kitchen as often as possible. There are so many benefits to teaching kids to cook, even basic things- not to mention that time spent bonding! Shane started spending time in the kitchen when he was little, mostly because I found that when he had a hand in helping to make his food he was more likely to eat it.
Now that he’s eleven, he has moved up to making full blown recipes {usually with supervision}- and he’s still way more likely to try something new if he made it himself! That’s not the only benefit to having kids help in the kitchen, though!

Having kids help make their food gets them to practice math and science, introduces an interactive way to discuss other cultures, and promotes independence. It also helps kids learn more about making healthier choices and the impact that your food choices have on your body and depending on the food, possibly the entire world!

Now that Zac is about to turn seven, it’s time for him to level up his kitchen game. He’s done small things in the kitchen with me, like helping me stir or mix ingredients and making homemade pizza. But he’s old enough to start tackling easier recipes on his own!

We recently started our journey to getting Zac acquainted with the kitchen, and we started with the classic first recipe for kids to make- a peanut butter and jelly sandwich! To get him even more excited to try something new, we used Oroweat Organic White Made with Whole Wheat Bread.

We’re excited about this new bread from Oroweat Organic because it’s an organic bread for kids that has the simple taste that kids love and is made with the whole grains that parents approve of- and Disney’s Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse are on the label so of course that’s a huge hit! In addition to being fun, it’s also USDA Organic Bread that is Non-GMO Project Verified. It’s plant-based and includes a good source of Vitamins A, D & E.

As if that wasn’t enough, Oroweat Organic White Made with Whole Wheat Bread is baked using renewable wind energy! As a member of 1% for the Planet, Oroweat Organic donates 1% of the revenue from sales of this bread to support environmental causes- so this bread is not just a good choice for your kids, it’s a sustainable and eco-friendly option as well!

We were sent a fun package from Oroweat containing everything we needed for a fun and sustainable lunch- Disney’s Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse sandwich cutters, reusable sandwich bags, biodegradable plates made of wheat straw, tips for having healthier days, an apron and chef’s hat for Zac, and even Oroweat Organic White Made with Whole Wheat Bread! Zac was so excited to open the package and find all the goodies- and the chef’s hat and apron made him even more excited to get in the kitchen!

While a peanut butter and jelly sandwich might sound like the most basic thing- and it is easy- it’s a great first foray into the kitchen for kids. It’s simple enough for them to do each and every step, but has enough steps for them to feel a sense of accomplishment. And of course, it’s delicious! I hung out with Zac while he made his sandwich and answered questions as he had them, but I let him tackle it all on his own- and he was so proud! He even made another sandwich for Shane because he was having so much fun.

If you’ve been looking for an easy way to get your kids in the kitchen- at any age- I suggest starting easy with a sandwich! Even if they don’t like peanut butter and jelly, there’s bound to be some sort of sandwich that they do like that you could guide them through making. And be sure to grab Oroweat Organic White Made with Whole Wheat Bread at your local grocery store to make it an even better sandwich! {If you’re on the West Coast, look for Oroweat bread, but if you’re on the East coast it’ll be named Arnold and in the Midwest keep an eye out for Brownberry. They’re all the same!}
How do you encourage your kids to get involved in the kitchen?
