This post is brought to you by Sears Home Services. All opinions are my own.
Did you know that you could be wasting money in energy costs- just by having outdated windows? Whether the wind is whistling through the window frame in the winter or the air conditioning is escaping your home in the summer, old or worn windows can be costing you a lot on your utility bill. So how do you know it’s time to change them?
1. They’re old. Plain and simple, if your home was built a long time ago and the windows haven’t been redone since, your windows are probably not working at full capacity. Window technology has changed in the last 20 years, and the EPA’s Energy Star program now rates windows for how energy efficient they are. Newer options like double or triple paned glass and expanding insulation can make a huge difference.
2. They’re broken. Whether a baseball went through a window in your attic or you just have one that’s off the track and can’t go back on, it’s worth replacing at least the one that’s broken. Not only is it a waste of energy, but it can let in insects and even home invaders, depending on the location of the window and the damage done to it.
3. You can feel that they aren’t working. According to the Sears Home Services website, “If you put your hand against the edge of the window where the frame meets the wall and feel a draft, it’s time to replace them.” Sometimes you can even feel the chill coming through from further away- if that’s the case, don’t ignore it!
