Since it’s been too hot to go outside until the evenings, we’ve been spending most of our summer inside. We’ve been doing activities and crafts together, and recently we did a craft for a cause! FamilyFun magazine has partnered with generationON and Enchanted Makeovers to invite readers to create fun, homemade superhero capes for children living in shelters.
It seems strange that a piece of felt could make a difference for a child in need, but they serve a few purposes. First, they encourage imaginative play, letting kids remain kids and giving them a chance to have fun, even when they may not have much. Secondly, it reminds them that they don’t need to wait for a superhero to help them- they can be their own superhero!
The third reason, and the one that is the reasons these organizations are encouraging people everywhere to participate, is that receiving a handcrafted cape shows that someone truly does care. It reminds them that they matter and instills confidence in them at a time when they really need it.
FamilyFun magazine sent us some supplies, and the other day we made our own capes and had so much fun!
Zac just wanted to wear a plain one- he didn’t want any decorations slowing him down in battle {or he just couldn’t wait for me to add any decorations, either way}.
Shane got to work on his green one! He picked it because it’s his favorite color and he wanted a kid somewhere to have his favorite color.
I cut some decorations out using some of the templates found on the FamilyFun magazine website.
We had a lot of fun as a family decorating the capes and even more fun playing with them! We made quite a few to donate and I let my boys keep one each as a reminder that they’re superheroes, too.
If you’re interested in making capes for a great cause, you can find out more in the summer issue of Family Fun or on their website!
