We got Bella Notte in March 2008. She was only 4 months old and the family who had adopted her couldn’t handle her spunk. They had three kids and Bella liked to jump and play rough, and she wouldn’t stop chewing on everything.
At the time, Justin and I didn’t have kids, and when we saw her big ears and curly tail on Craigslist, we knew she was our fur-baby. We went to pick her up from the family & we had no idea how the perfect little dog that sat before us could possibly be as hyper as they said she was. She sat perfectly still, licked my hand when I went to pet her, and sat nicely on my lap the entire way home.
She was afraid to walk up the stairs to my apartment, and she had to be carried up. As soon as she got through the door, she turned into a completely different dog. She started nipping, ran around in circles, and started putting everything in her mouth. We had no idea what we had gotten ourselves into.
That phase lasted a couple of weeks {and I had a lot of casualties as a result, including a pair of designer sunglasses that Justin had given me for Christmas that I still miss} but then she outgrew it. She got her shots and I started taking her to the dog park, where she would hesitantly go up to the big dogs, sniff them, and then immediately roll onto her back. For as crazy as she was at home, she was very shy with other dogs. They fascinated her though, and whenever we came home from the park she actually slept instead of tearing my room apart while I did.
In December 2008, Bella had a first birthday party. My mom made a bone-shaped cake for her & we set up a table at the dog park with treats and favors for the other dogs who attended. At this point, she was still playful and full of energy, but she had finally learned basic commands. She had also become the third member of our family: it was Justin, Bella Notte, and me.
Then in January of 2009, we found out that we’d be expecting a fourth member of our family: Shane. I continued taking Bella to the dog park throughout my pregnancy, but once I started to show she no longer wanted to play with the other dogs, and she would growl at any dog that came near me. Somehow, she knew that she had to protect me and her little brother. As our due date grew closer, we worried how Bella would react to a baby. She was fully grown and fifty pounds- and still pretty hyper. We worried that she’d jump on him or worse, get jealous and act out. I realized that if she wasn’t well behaved, we might have to find her a new home. The thought left me heartbroken and I cried over it for days.
When Shane finally arrived, I was in the hospital for three days. Justin went to the apartment to take Bella out and feed her, and on one of those days he brought a blanket Shane had been wrapped in for Bella to sniff. The next day, we brought Shane home. We left Bella in the kennel for a minute to see how she’d react, but she was so excited to see me after I’d been gone for three days that we decided to let her out. We put Shane in the car seat so that I wouldn’t be holding him if she jumped on me, and put him on the couch so that she couldn’t jump on him.
After jumping on me several times, she did go check him out. She sniffed him, and when he let out a little cry, she jumped backwards. We could read the confusion on her face, and cautiously watched her as she met her new brother. To our surprise, she licked his foot and then went to lay down. After all of the worry and fear leading up to their meeting, that was it.
Since that day, Bella has been like a real big sister to Shane. She loves to play with him, and follows him around the house. She lets him sit on her {even though we tell him not to} and pull her ears, and she always rushes to him when he’s crying.
Having a dog has been such a wonderful thing for us. She really is part of the family! Now that Shane’s a little older, I plan on returning to the dog park so that they can both run around and have fun together like a real brother and sister.

My dogs are so spoiled. (oohhh I like this font) So anyways… We got our first dog in 2007. Star, is the princess. I had never had a dog before. She was showered with attention and anytime I had to work long hours she spent the day at my mom’s or my boyfriends (he got me Star) house. Star pretty much got to do what she wanted. She slept on the couch and the bed. It made her happy. Then we got Maverick in 2010. He is a needy, needy puppy. Fortunately when we got him I worked graveyard and my husband worked day shift so there was always someone there to pay attention to Maverick. He too, does whatever he wants. He sleeps on the bed throughout the night, or will go downstairs and lie on the couch (with a blanket of course). These dogs have no upsetting times. Really, they don’t even know when they are in trouble. The still wag their tails and smile. (They’re never really in trouble, they’re good dogs) They play great together. I think that since getting Maverick and giving Star a companion has really helped her be less bored. She still lies around and takes naps, but she’s a lot more playful. They make each other happy. To keep them healthy we feed them (expensive) holistic grain free food, called Taste of the Wild. Star kept getting diarrhea frequently and when we’d switch her foods she’d stop. So we figured out she had some kind of allergy so we started with the new food. It’s great. No diarrhea for years. Along with feeding them dog food (that’s pretty much made out of people food) we give them raw bones that have marrow in them. They go crazy for them, it’ll last them a couple hours too! then when the marrow is gone they have a bone to chew on that never goes away! We haven’t had to take a trip to the vet because the dogs were sick in years. So I think we’re doing well with the options we have chosen for them… they’re happy too. As I type, they are laying on the couch next to me each on a blanket, dreaming of chasing bunnies.

I had the same fears when Lil C came home from the hospital. We lived with my ex-inlaws at that time… So they brought home the newborn hat from the hospital before we got there… and surprisingly, both dogs were okay with a new wiggle worm coming into the house! As for how to keep my pups happy and healthy – Even though he’s 8ish, he still acts like a puppy I make sure that he gets a little one-on-one mommy-puppy time every night, so he knows hes loved! (as it is, he’s sitting on the arm of my recliner while i type) That, and a little doggy treat every now and then helps too!

Regular yearly vet visits are a must here in Texas. The mosquitos are so big they could carry a dog away, and we don’t want heartworms! Good food and fresh water daily, and of course a good run are all important! We also have tons of chickens, ducks and geese, which we consider pets! They get vitamins, and good food and fresh water every day, and reward us with wonderful eggs!

We don’t have a dog, but my fiance’s grandma has a lab named Bob, so we keep Bob healthy and happy by walking him and throwing a ball around!

Bella is so cute, I love her big ears! Our dog has become a major part of our family as well and has been like a third child since we rescued her form a horrible situation almost 10 years ago. We try to feed her well and shower her with love. I need to get in the habit of taking her for walks again because she is getting plump in her old age! Dogs are such a wonderful part of life!
Roxanne DeBord says
We try to spend time with our kitties. They may be self-sufficient, but I can tell such a difference in their attitude when we play and pet them. They are so loving and as long as they are purring, I know I’ve done my job as a Mama! I also surprise them with little treats and toys from time to time! They absolutely love that. Our babies are definitely just like one of the family.
Jenilee says
I feel like we’ve been really lucky because all of our pets have been very healthy. We don’t do anything extra ordinary to keep them healthy, just the normal stuff! Lots of love might help, though! 🙂

I am a huge animal lover and currently we have 2 dogs who are like my kids. We have Marshall, a Golden Retriever who is almost 10, and Abby, a Shih Tzu who is 14. And, we will be getting a new little guy (Golden Retriever) in the beginning of April. His name is Forrest (like forrest gump.. LOL) We are so excited!!
I feed my dogs quality food as well as make my own food for them from time to time. And, after my foot surgery I will be able to go for more walks with my fur kids. Our old guy is over weight and showing his age. He loves to walk and play but pays for it bad. We hope with the new puppy he can get some spring back in his step, and will be a good teacher for Forrest, since Marshall is the best dog in the world.

I think the most important way to keep your pets healthy (and happy) is to let them know that you care about them, and taking them for walks. By exercising them, you’re spending time with your pet, but also making sure they stay healthy.
Limit the treats, and also the intake of people food. However tempting it may be, it’s only going to hurt them in the long run.

My parents had a situation very similar to yours. They ended up with a dog that was a holy terror as a puppy. She was so bad in fact, that my dad named her DeeDee, short for “Damn Dog.” And then I came along and she was a protective as could be. I now have a “Blue Collie” or “Border Heeler” dog who has epilepsy. To keep her healthy, she gets medicine and she goes to work with my step-dad to check on cows and other farm stuff. She loves helping get the cows where they need to go. She also loves to play fetch on any kind constantly.

We have three doggie babies: Mitzie, Hank and Fonzie. They all have their tags and see their vet for a check-up every six months. We have a big fenced in back yard for running and doggie potty breaks. Fonzie is big and a runner though (who can easily jump the fence when he spots another dog) so he is also microchipped and we try to walk him on a leash whenever possible, even in the backyard, just so he doesn’t run off. He always comes back but when he’s on a mission he doesn’t watch for cars so we try not to take any more chances than we have to.
