Shane is a total Baby Einstein baby. When he was an infant, the first DVD I ever got him was “Neighborhood Animals” by Baby Einstein. He LOVED it and would smile and laugh while he watched it. On occasion, we still pop it into the DVD player, but instead of just staring & laughing, he now makes the animal sounds as the animals come onto the screen, &in some cases he says their names. We have quite a few more Baby Einstein movies as well but Neighborhood Animals will always have a soft spot in my heart.
That said, when I learned about the Discovery Kits I was super excited. They are “kits” because they’re more than just a DVD- you get a CD and either discovery cards or a book as well. Shane has a set of discovery cards that my sister handed down to us from her kids, and he loves them; he also has some Baby Einstein books that he loves so I knew that no matter which we got {each kit comes with one or the other: books or cards}, he’d love them.
The kit that we received for review is the World of Rhythm kit. It comes with the DVD, CD & a board book. The first thing Shane wanted was the book- logical, since DVDs & CDs are no fun to play with without a DVD or CD player- and he LOVES it! He points to all of the animals & makes their sounds, and asks what the instruments & other items are on the pages. The CD is great, too- we listen to it in the car and he really seems to enjoy it. But of course, the favorite is the DVD!
As soon as the iconic Baby Einstein caterpillar crawled across the screen to the theme song, Shane was hooked. It was the first time I’ve emptied the dishwasher in peace in probably 4 months. With most of the shows that he watches, it’s really more “noise”- he checks in with what’s going on occasionally but mostly goes off & plays with his toys or the dog. With Baby Einstein’s World of Rhythm, he stood as close as he could get to the screen & only moved away to go sit down after about 15 minutes. I’m telling you, he was like one with the movie.
I thought it was cute as well- there were silly animal puppets to accompany the introduction to instruments that this DVD focuses on. It was kind of funny- I saw a couple of things on the DVD that we do in music classes at work, but that’s alright because they’re effective! We saw kids playing instruments together & singing and once Shane even went & got his maracas when he saw another kid playing with ones that looked the same. I love Baby Einstein for the good job that they do of helping toddlers to connect symbols & ideas.
There are now NINE discovery kits available, including World of Rhythm, the one I tried out. I’m really looking forward to checking out World of Words & World of Colors on my own {not without Shane, just without a review copy ;)}as well! You can get the Discovery Kits for about $15.99 at many retailers or online at Amazon. Enjoy!
