The Benefits of Dairy & Everyday Dairy Ideas

We all know there are five food groups, but do you know how each one helps your body? I’ve been teaching Shane a bit about nutrition & in doing so discovered some information myself. Below are some of the benefits of everyday dairy consumption:

5 Benefits of Dairy by @NotQuiteSusie

1. Eating dairy products is linked to improved bone health, and is especially important for kids for this reason because bone mass is still being built.

2. Eating dairy products is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

3. Diets that include dairy show a decreased risk of Type 2 Diabetes.

4. Yogurt, milk & soymilk provide potassium, which helps to maintain healthy blood pressure.

5. Research shows that people who have a diet rich in dairy tend to weigh less & have less body fat.

I’m not the kind of person who can just sit down & drink a glass of milk. Not only am I lactose intolerant {I am fine with other dairy products as long as I don’t go overboard} but I just don’t like it. Justin’s the same way, so our family has come up with ways to easily include dairy in our daily lives.

Salad with Shredded Parmesan

We add it to salads: Whether it’s Kraft’s shredded parmesan or feta, cheese makes for a great salad topping!

Bagel with Cream Cheese

We eat it for breakfast: We all love cereal {which of course has milk/lactose-free milk!} &bagels with Philadelphia cream cheese. Shane always asks for his bagels to be topped with “white stuff”!

Activia

We even make it a treat: I love Dannon Activia yogurt, but it becomes even more of a treat when you freeze it into yogurt popsicles! We ran out of popsicle sticks so I haven’t been able to make any lately, but it’s a treat we all love.

Spend 15 Save 5 at Safeway

If you eat a lot of dairy {or even just a little} you’ll love the new deal going on at Safeway! Right now if you spend $15 on select {&specially marked} dairy items, you will get a coupon at checkout for $5 off your next purchase! That’s a huge savings &since several of the included products already on sale, you can save lots of money! We went to our local Vons {the Safeway affiliate in Vegas} & made out really well. You can view my shopping trip here, & also find out more about the sale at the Everyday Dairy website.

How do you include dairy everyday?

Recipe: Tropical Coconut Pizza #tropicalfruit

I love fruit any time of the year, but it’s definitely at it’s best in the summer. Between the fresh peaches, tropical pineapple, and cool watermelon, I probably eat more fruit in the summer than throughout the other three seasons combined! So when Social Fabric asked me to make the Tropical Fruit Pizza recipe by Dole, it was completely perfect!

Tropical Fruit Coupon Sale

First I had to head out to the store to pick up the ingredients {you can view my whole trip in my G+ album} and saw that there was an awesome sale on Dole canned fruit- many items were Buy 1 Get 1 Free with your Vons {Safeway} card! Combine that with the great coupon from last weekend’s newspaper for 50 cents off two cans of Dole Tropical Fruit & you’ve got a great deal!

strawberry cream cheese

I did have to make one substitution- our store didn’t carry cream cheese with pineapple {they weren’t just out- they don’t carry it} so I used cream cheese with strawberry instead. I figured it’d be a safe bet since there are strawberries in the recipe and I was right, it tasted great! It makes it a little less tropical though, but you can just add some extra Dole Tropical Fruit!

Once I got home, I got to making the recipe. It sounded difficult when I read it ahead of time- I’d never toasted coconut, and I was skeptical about using cream cheese as a “crust”. But I followed the directions & it came out perfectly!

Tropical Coconut Pizza

Tropical Coconut Pizza

Ingredients:
-1 container {8 oz.} cream cheese with pineapple, softened
-1/4 cup sugar
-1 cup thawed whipped topping
-1/2 cup flaked coconut, toasted
-1 can {15.25 oz} DOLE Tropical Fruit, drained
-1 cup sliced DOLE strawberries
-1 kiwi fruit, peeled and sliced

Toasting Coconut

First, I toasted the coconut {which apparently is done by putting coconut on a baking sheet in the oven for 10 mins at 350- while stirring often}.

Kitchenaid

Then I mixed the cream cheese & sugar until light and fluffy- you could totally do this with a hand held mixer but it was just way easier to use the Kitchenaid! After that, add in the whipped topping & coconut.

Spread out mixture and freeze

Next, I lined a baking sheet with waxed paper, and then spread the cream cheese mixture into a circle, and built the edges up slightly with the back of the spoon. This part intimidated me reading about it, but it took all of one minute & gave me no trouble at all. Then just freeze it for about 4 hours {or until firm}.

Tropical Fruit Pizza

After it’s done and has become a “crust”, place it onto a serving plate. Garnish the crust with extra toasted coconut if desired, and then arrange the tropical fruit, strawberries & kiwi on the crust. Serve immediately.

Other than having to wait for four hours {which was torture, because this sounded SO good}, the recipe was super easy to make. &It was well worth the wait- I loved it {and may have picked off some extra fruit once my serving was gone} and Justin couldn’t stop eating it! It’s definitely a very Summery treat and I’m definitely going to be making it again. It looks like I’ll have to make another trip to the store to stock up on DOLE Tropical Fruit while the sale is still on!

You can find more great recipes from Dole on their website- and be sure to follow them on Facebook & Twitter, too!

What’s your favorite summer fruit?

Save Time AND Money with just for U from Vons! {Review & Giveaway!}

When Shane was a baby, I couponed. Not like the often-crazy people you see on Extreme Couponing, but enough that I knew good prices for things & had a dedicated shelf for my “stockpile”. Now that I’m working part-time, blogging full-time, and have a crazy toddler instead of a baby who sleeps all day, my time for couponing has severely diminished.

I don’t have time to sit & clip tons of coupons, but I still love saving money, which is why I was super excited to hear about the new just for U program at Vons grocery stores!

The just for U program was designed to help you save both time & money- there are no coupons to clip but rather digital coupons that you can load right to your Club Card with the click of a button.

digital coupons to card

The program also lives up to it’s name by really being just for U- your purchase history is taken into account on your card to give you access to special savings selected just for you based on what you normally buy! This is a great way to not only save you extra money but save you even more time, too- what’s the use of looking through sales you won’t use?

just for u

My personalized deals included lots of great deals on cleaning supplies, and it was really cool because each item listed the Walmart Price {or for Safeway branded items, it showed their regular price} as well as my “Personalized Price”, which was always way lower than the regular prices!

personalized deals

It was super easy to sign up, too- I just went online & hooked up the shopper’s card I already had to my email address so I could have online access to select coupons & get my deals. And when I got to the store, all I had to do was swipe my Club Card!

I love this new system because not only does it save me money, but it allows me to feel good about saving all that money without wasting hours clipping paper coupons!

Making a Cold & Flu Kit Featuring #FloridaOJ!

I may have mentioned about a million times just a few times that I was sick for almost all of January. Justin didn’t get sick, which I attribute to his daily Orange Juice smoothie habit, but Shane & I both got hit with the flu. While Shane recovered after about four days, it lingered for me & I didn’t fully shake it for almost three weeks. While I’m happy to say we’ve finally moved on & kicked that big bad bug out of our home, that doesn’t mean that we’re in the clear yet. It is still cold & flu season after all. But after suffering last month, I’ve decided to be more prepared for the next time the flu comes knocking!

There’s a new pamphlet out at Safeway stores called “Be Well. Save Well.” It has valuable coupons featuring some of my personal favorite products, like Clorox Wipes and Kleenex Cool Touch tissues, but even better than that are the tips for staying healthy that are included!

You can click the image below to enlarge it enough to read them:

Inspired by the tips in the pamphlet {and my hatred of being sick}, I set out to make a cold & flu kit! I headed to my local Von’s, which is the Safeway chain out here in Vegas, since they have such great prices and because they’re the ones who inspired me to do this in the first place! To make my body less susceptible to illness, I stocked up on produce & nuts- but more importantly, I also got a big ol’ jug of Florida Orange Juice!

I also stocked up on my must-have’s for when I’m sick: Hall’s cough drops, DayQuil & NyQuil, Ginger Ale, crackers, Be Koool patches {those ones are for Shane}, and of course the Kleenex Cool Touch tissues featured in the pamphlet. {If you haven’t tried them yet, do so immediately. I’ve decided they’re the only kind I’ll use now.} I got Clorox Wipes, too, to help prevent the spread of germs.

My kit is all packed & ready to go so the next time someone gets the sniffles, I’ll just have to grab the basket from the closet & we’ll be good to go.

As I said, it’s still cold & flu season, so now’s a good time to go stock up on sick day essentials at your local Safeway store. &Make sure to pick up the “Be Well. Save Well.” pamphlet for some great coupons to use!

Learn more about the kit I made by viewing my Google+ story!

Be sure to check out Safeway on Facebook & Twitter, and learn more about 100% Florida Orange Juice on their website or Facebook page!
