Letters to My Son: Three & a Half

Dear Shane,

This last month has been full of ups & downs for you. Despite your history of just about never getting sick, you’ve spent the last two weeks alternating between perfectly healthy & feverish, sometimes within hours. &Just before that started, we took a trip to Disneyland, which you were thrilled about, despite only wanting to go on a handful of different rides.

Lately, you’ve been amazing me daily with the new things you say- not the words themselves, as those have been flowing for a long time, but in the way that you use them. “I do want to do that, after all!”, “That is a great idea!” and “That’s not how that works,” have become common phrases and they crack me up every time I hear them. You just seem like such a big kid now, I can’t get over it most days!

Since you turned 3 & a half this month, I thought I’d share with you your favorites at this age. {This was inspired by Christa at LittleBGCG} I hope to remember to update it every six months so that when you are old enough to read this, you can see what mattered most to you at this age!

Letters to My Son: The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far

Dear Shane,

As I thought about what to write in this letter to you, hopefully the first of many to come, I wondered what I should write about. That silly thing you said the other day about Bella? That your favorite color is green? But I could barely concentrate as you walked around the room, singing {really, yelling} into a temporal thermometer that you turned into your microphone. It’s just one of many, many ways that you remind me of, well, me.

Letters to my son

Whenever I see your eyes light up at the sight of an animal, or I hear you ask for the thousandth time to go to Mickey Mouse’s castle {what you call Disneyland}, I am constantly reminded that the apple doesn’t fall far. You love doing “pages” {worksheets, like dot pages, tracing, and even mazes}, working on crafts & projects and love learning- and while you’re currently nervous about starting preschool in the Fall, I know that once you are there you will thrive.

You have close friends- several of them- and you know them all by name. You now know how to make up your own games with them and you can actually hold conversations with each other, many of which you repeat back to me once we get home- it’s what us Mommies could only imagine back when you were all toddlers. You have your first crush & while I think it’s adorable, I have to admit it terrifies me a little. I’m so not ready for you to be a grown-up, and I was really hoping you’d believe in cooties for just a few more years. But again, the apple doesn’t fall far- don’t tell Daddy, but I had my first kiss when I was your age. {Don’t get any ideas.}

shane soccer

{That’s you pretending to be a bear in soccer class}

While you often remind me of myself, I see a lot of Daddy in you, too. You always have a joke to tell or a silly face to make, and you’ll do anything to make me laugh. You excel at sports, and while your soccer class is more about playing silly games than actual skill at this point, you still seem so very in your element on the field. You got your first guitar for Christmas & while you have no idea how to play it, you already sound better than I do when I try to play.

I am proud when I see bits of myself in you, and I admit I tear up when I realize how much you are like your Daddy, another man I love so much. But above all else, I love that you’re YOU. You have qualities that are all your own- even the traits that we’ve given to you now have your own unique twist. You have your own opinions on things, and you know very well what you want. You have specific favorites- everything from a favorite shirt to a favorite animal to favorite foods- and you want to be surrounded by those favorites constantly. With each passing day, you continue to define who you are, &I love that person more than anything.

Love,
Mommy

This post is a part of a new meme I’m participating in called “Letters to My Son” where myself & a circle of bloggers will be writing monthly letters to our children. Be sure to check out the next blog in the circle, A Mom’s Impression!

Wordless Wednesday: “Howdy, Partner!”

Shane outfit
This is what happens when you let a 3 year old pick out his outfit. I thought it was pretty cute- particularly when he walked around tipping his hat saying “Howdy, Partner!” Apparently, we should be living in Texas.

{Not So} Wordless Wednesday: Shane’s 3rd Birthday!

Since we spent the whole weekend in San Diego for Shane’s birthday, we decided not to do a real party. Instead we just spent the day hanging out, playing with presents & eating cake. My mom & brother stopped by for a bit & Justin’s mom came by after work {his dad was out of town for work} too so that was fun.

Birthday Hat
{Please kindly ignore the mess! I didn’t want to waste his birthday cleaning.}

So on Friday night, when we were going to bed to get ready to wake up early on Saturday to travel, Shane asked if he was going to get to wear a birthday hat on his birthday. I hadn’t picked any up {we’ve never worn them for anyone else’s birthday or any of his previous ones} & we were headed out of town so I panicked a bit because I didn’t want to let him down. Luckily Daddy went out Monday morning to get some & saved the day!

pile of presents

Despite deciding to give him a vacation as a birthday present, I still had to get him a few things…

opening presents

He’s becoming a pro at unwrapping! Maybe this Christmas it won’t take three hours to open presents!

Opening presents 2

I was pretty proud of this- I found wrapping paper that matches my site. I did that on accident, too- I just really love lime green & chevron. &Shane’s favorite color is green so I had to get it.

Playing with cars

One thing he got was a set of the new Toy Story wheelies from Little People & I kept catching him all over the house laying down playing with them. He loves them! {Not a review}

Lighting Birthday Candles

Finally, it was time for cake!

Blowing Out Candles

He was so excited to blow out his candles!

green cake

I asked Shane what kind of cake he wanted for his birthday & asked if he wanted Thomas or Toy Story. His response? “Green.” You got it, dude. {It was vanilla with vanilla frosting & all kinds of green decorations clumsily added.}

We were all a bit tired from our vacation but we still had a great day & enjoyed it with our big three year old!

Happy Birthday Shane!!!

Three years ago today, my water broke at around 5am.

Twelve hours went by with basically nothing & I was taken in for an emergency C-Section when Shane’s heart rate started plummeting & skyrocketing over and over.

Then this happened:

Then this happened:

&Then this happened:

&Now that tiny infant is my big three year old, who since those photos has not only actually become aware that he has fingers, and toes, but has even chosen a favorite color, shape, number, animal, food, even letter; has learned a catalog of songs that he’ll show off on demand; and has allowed me to see the world through the eyes of a child all over again.

Has anyone seen the last three years? I seen to have lost it somewhere.

Happy Birthday Shane!
