Back to School Tools: Get Ready for School with Boys & Girls Clubs of America!

Back to School season is in full swing- some of Shane’s friends started preschool last week & the rest of our town goes back to school tomorrow. While Shane’s not in school this year, we’ve been doing lots of learning here as well and will be beginning our light homeschool curriculum in a couple of weeks! There is SO much to do to prepare for back to school, no matter what grade your child is in- both for parents and students! If you’re feeling overwhelmed, Boys & Girls Clubs of America is here to help!

Boys & Girls Clubs of America {BGCA} is a program that keeps kids on track by providing recreational activities including sports and arts programs, and also educates by offering education & career programs as well as character & leadership programs. You can learn more about what Boys & Girls Clubs of America does here & even find a local club using the search tool on the right hand side of their page!

This year, Boys & Girls Clubs of America has teamed up with some great partners to make Back to School easier on everyone. You can find all types of information for preparing for back to school on their Back to School website, including time management tips and a guide for parents of middle and high schoolers to keep their kids on track & engaged.

Tools for Back to School

One of the great partners that BGCA has partnered with is Disney, who along with BGCA created the Tools for School initiative, which includes a pop-quiz style game that you can play- and for every question you get right, supplies are donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs! {Click here to play!}

Another one of the BGCA partners, jcpenney, is making it easy to donate to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Any time you’re shopping at jcpenney, you can simply round up at the register and jcpenney will donate the difference to BGCA as part of their jcp cares program. Easy enough! {While you’re at jcpenney, be sure to get your kids in grades K-6 a haircut- they’re free for the entire month of August at any jcpenney salon!}

Going back to school can be stressful all around, but at least you can feel more prepared after utilizing all of the tools available from Boys & Girls Club of America!

How many kids are you sending back to school this year? What do you do to prepare them- and yourself?

5 Tips for Great Family Portraits

I LOVE photos. I have literally thousands &thousands of photos of Shane, doing everything from taking his first breath to eating dinner tonight {seriously}. That said, I’m seriously lacking in the professional photography area. I have only had Shane’s photos taken once, and it was when he was six months old- and he’s almost three. So, you could say we’re overdue.

I do actually plan on taking him in soon though, so I’ve been looking at some of my favorite pictures from his last photo shoot for some inspiration for our next portraits! Below are some of my favorite photos from that session, with my tips on getting your own great photos!

1. Use color: Whether it’s the color of your clothing, your accessories, or your background, don’t be afraid to use color! It can really make a picture beautiful. I wanted to use the blue tulle in this photo because it brought out Shane’s eyes, but it ended up even better as it gives a quality of softness that reminds me of him at that age.

2. Capture milestones: Milestones should be celebrated- and not just the big ones like birthdays. At this point in time, Shane had just really started being fascinated by his feet, and now I have that stage captured forever.

3. Accessorize: Accessories can make an outfit, and they can also make a photo! When kids are older, you can use accessories that reflect their personalities, but since Shane didn’t really have one at that point I used this Nebraska bib because Justin’s family is from there & they’re all big Huskers fans. So you can use accessories to make a statement about the person in the photo, or your family as a whole!

4. Don’t Forget the Little Things: Kids really do grow up too fast, and I am so glad that I thought to capture his little tiny toes before they turned into the smelly toddler feet they are today!

5. Don’t Stop Shooting: You never know when you’ll get the perfect expression! This one still makes me laugh every time I see it because it was one of the first times that he gave us this sarcastic expression {that he totally got from Justin}!

&While these may be tips I learned from taking infant photos, they can all be used for older kids & even portraits of the entire family!

If you’re as overdue for photos as I am, be sure to check out jcpportraits at jcpenney! When I was a kid, my parents always had my photos done at jcpenney because they were great with children {that’d be me} & always had lots of options for photos! &This month only, they have a great special going on: for $20, you can get 6 traditional photo sheets {&can mix and match sizes & images} as well as one free $9 sitting fee! A Visit from {Secret} Santa! #jcpSecretSanta

Well, Christmas is officially over, and I hope yours was terrific! Ours was amazing, &I’ll share more about it later in the week. But right now I want to thank my Secret Santa!

Last week I told you all about jcpenney’s Santa Tags and how neat they were to stick them on a gift to personalize it. I also said that I was able to choose a gift to send to the blogger than I was assigned for a Secret Santa exchange & that I was eagerly awaiting my own gift- and that gift finally came!

It was so fun to get an early Christmas gift- and it was nice because I got to have it displayed on Christmas when my family came over. It’s beautiful & fits perfectly on the ledge between the dining & living rooms- so it’s always on display!

So I want to give a giant THANK YOU to Mandy from Atlanta Military Mom!

Atlanta Military Mom

&I also want to give a shout-out to Lolli from Better in Bulk, who was the blogger than I was able to play Santa for! I searched through lots of gift ideas but finally found something perfect- Click on to her blog to see what I got her!

A big thank you to jcpenney & Mom Central for this super fun opportunity to give a gift to another blogger- this has been SO fun! I hope I get to do it again next year!

Have you ever done a Secret Santa exchange?

Who’s Your Santa? #jcpSecretSanta

If you’re like me, you’re still in the midst of gathering gifts for all of your friends & loved ones. If you’re REALLY like me, you have NO IDEA what to get half of those people. Most of the time I’m tempted to just give people Visa gift cards, because then I know they’ll use them, but unless the person specifically asks for that, I think that’s far too impersonal. So I rely on gift guides, both the ones compiled by bloggers such as myself {view my gift guide} and those of major stores.

jcpenney has always been one of my go-to stores for everything- clothes, home goods, toys, and- of course- gifts! So I’ve been spending a lot of time searching for the perfect gifts for the people on my “Nice” list and I’ve found a lot of their gifts on there! I’d show you some of them, but they all read my blog, so maybe not. ;)

I have some online ordering to do this weekend from jcpenney’s website, but I’ve already ordered one gift- for my Secret Santa recipient! Mom Central chose some bloggers & assigned us all a Secret Santa recipient, and we all chose a gift for them. I don’t think I can tell you what I chose for my awesome blogger, and I definitely can’t say who she is because I don’t want her to know yet, but I’ll tell you next week!

One of the most fun things about doing this {besides giving a fellow blogger a gift & the suprise- I love surprises!} was the Santa Tag! A Santa Tag is a brilliant new way to personalize your gifts brought to you {for free with a gift purchase!} by jcpenney. It’s basically a QR code that you can scan to leave a message on the gift you’re giving, and that you can scan on a gift you’ve received to hear the message!

Here’s a little bit better of a description on how to record your message:

If you’re the recipient of a gift with a Santa Tag on it, then you just scan the code with your phone, answer your phone when jcpenney calls & listen to your message!

This is such a great idea for anyone, but I love the idea of it for out of town friends & family!

Anyway, I’m so excited to find out who my Secret Santa is- but even more excited for my Secret Santa recipient to get her gift & listen to her message!

Do you have any last-minute Holiday shopping to do?
