What Hilarious Habits Does Your Significant Other Try to Hide?

Justin & I are coming up on our eighth anniversary of being together, and since we met when we were 15, we basically grew up together. I know almost everything about him, as he does me- the good, the bad, and the very, very annoying. Today I was asked to share the annoying habits that he tries to hide & so below I’m sharing just a few of his many “quirks”.

Justin knows everything. He reads articles on CNN & MSN & all the other abbreviated news websites all day at work and listens to NPR on the way to & from work. It would be a fun trait to have if it ended up sparking some discussions, but rather than share his abundance of knowledge of the day’s happenings, he keeps it all to himself. Then when I learn something that I find interesting, I’ll tell him- only to be met one sentence into my recap with “Oh yeah, I heard about that.”

He’s not just on his phone at work, though- that thing gets some serious usage at home, too. When we watch TV, it’s always something on the DVR, so if I’m the one with the remote, he even reads articles while I fast forward through the commercials. He seriously can’t even wait the 15 seconds for the show to start again! &Sometimes I’ll start a story {which almost always starts with “Are you listening?”- out of necessity, because if I don’t say it, he won’t} but then by the second sentence his head is already down, checking out the latest headlines.

His sarcasm is both one of my most & least favorite qualities about him. When we first met, we talked on the phone one night for six hours learning everything about each other. I remember him asking me what I thought about sarcasm, and I said it was “necessary.” I meant this, as it’s totally my humor style, and I love that he’s witty & funny & sarcastic. Unless he’s making fun of me.

When we’re watching TV, if he has the remote & I ask him to pause, he doesn’t hear me. Well, he HEARS me- he even turns his head my direction to indicate that he’s listening. Problem is, he doesn’t look at it, just tilts his head, so he ends up making this goofy expression that’s a dead giveaway that he didn’t actually pay any attention. It’s actually hilarious when I catch him, but it’s always annoying before it’s funny.

He hounds me about getting rid of things- if he had it his way, I’d own a pair of jeans, one shirt, and one shoe &no other belongings. I totally get that, most men hate clutter- but he won’t let me throw away his clothes from junior high. He literally has shirts that moved to Vegas with him when he was 15 that he hasn’t worn since they were unpacked, yet they take up over half of the closet that we share.

Speaking of clothing, he has 6 types of socks. Literally. There’s the black set, then all the white ones: the white Hanes, the white Champions with the scrunchie part on the arch, the white Champions with the scrunchie part on the arch that are low rise, the plain white ones, and the white Champions with nothing on the arch. I wouldn’t care about his socks, but I’m the one who has to fold & match them, and somehow there’s always 1 of each that doesn’t have a match in any given load. I’m ready to just throw them all away & buy him flip flops.

In spite of all of his annoying habits, I am madly in love with him- even if he drives me a little mad sometimes!

The Best & Worst Anniversary Gifts I’ve Received

Justin & I are coming up on our 8th anniversary, which will be September 6th. The “traditional” gifts for the 8th anniversary are bronze or pottery, and the “modern” gifts are linens or lace. While I can think of something with lace that Justin may want me to get, none of the choices sound like very appealing gifts for me to receive. But then again, they’d be better than the gifts I usually get for our anniversaries!

One year, I received a beautiful diamond necklace in the shape of a heart. It had two rows of black diamonds & one of white diamonds, and it was beautiful. It was so exactly my taste, and I actually wear it daily and keep it on day & night. So what’s the problem?

Well, of all of the seven anniversaries we’ve shared, that’s the only one where I received a gift at all! The first few years, I would spend a long time choosing something to give to him on our anniversary, only to get nothing in return. Finally, I gave up.

I promise, I don’t actually care about him buying me things. But what I do care about is the thought that goes into it- it really is “the thought that counts”. He could print me out a picture of something he chose for me & not even really buy it- I just want to know that on our anniversary, he’s thinking of me and wanting to express and celebrate our love for each other.

This is where I need to note that he’s actually quite a fantastic gift giver- he knows exactly what I want &does love to give it to me and make me happy. In the last year alone, I’ve gotten a Clarisonic {my birthday}, KitchenAid Stand Mixer {Christmas}, iPhone {just because/belated Valentine’s Day}, and DSLR camera {Mother’s Day}. All are amazing gifts that are far too generous. But yet, every year, September 6th goes by like any other day.

I’d gladly give up a Valentine’s Day gift {or really ANY of them} to use it for our anniversary. It’s such a special day that signifies another year of our partnership, and I don’t feel that we’ve done a great job reflecting just how important it is.

So, this year, I’m calling him on it. I don’t care if my gift is from the dollar store- we WILL be exchanging gifts this year!

Luckily, I’m not the only one who is less than pleased with their anniversary gift {or lack thereof}. When I saw this trailer for the new movie, Hope Springs, I was laughing so hard!
