Disney Minnie Mouse Bow-tique Super Surprise Party for LeapPad & Leapster Explorer {Review & Giveaway!}

Shane is a huge Disney Jr. fan, and one of his absolute favorite shows is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. He loves all of the characters & likes to act out episodes with the “guys” {little figures} he inherited from when I was a kid. He has a few Mickey & Minnie games for the iPad and loves them, so when I had the chance to review the new Minnie Mouse Bow-tique Super Surprise Party game for his LeapPad!

minnie's bow-tique

In the Minnie’s Bow-tique game, Daisy and the rest of Minnie’s friends are about to throw a surprise party for Minnie! They don’t want her to know though and they try to keep her busy by having her make them bows all day. There are three mini-games to prepare for the party: Ribbon Roundup, Butterfly Bows, and Daisy’s Dressing Room. You can also design bows in the Bow Design Studio and play Hide & Seek with Cuckoo Loca!

Like all LeapFrog games, this game automatically adjusts to your child’s skill level. For example, in the Ribbon Round-Up game, in the lower levels you are asked to tap on ribbons with the same color and pattern. When your child becomes very skilled at this, the game will adjust itself to go up to the next level, where your child will have to tap on ribbons with the same uppercase letter, and the same lowercase letter.

While the game is very educational, it also allows your child to just have fun, too! Shane absolutely loves the bow design studio, where he can pick some ribbon and decorate the bow however he wants. The first time he did this part, he struggled with using the stylus to tie the ribbon into a bow. He practiced just a couple of times & now he’s really good at it- and super, super proud of himself for mastering it {I’m proud, too!}.

The only thing Shane didn’t like about this game? It only let him put like fifteen sparkles onto the bows when he wanted to cover every single inch. Apparently he likes glitter almost as much as his Mommy.

Buy It: You can find Minnie’s Bow-tique Super Surprise Party wherever LeapFrog games are sold or online at LeapFrog.com. You can also purchase it as a downloadable app.

How to Get Kids Excited About Flash Cards: Hot Dots Jr.!

I believe in flash cards. When I was a kid, I learned my times tables using them, and when I got older & went to high school I created my own to study. So I may or may not have purchased color flash cards for Shane when he was like, a year old.

The thing is- and I learned this very, very quickly- three year olds aren’t really into flash cards. They start out super excited about them, but then after five or so cards they get bored & move on to the next thing. I truly believe in the value of them, but they only work if you actually use them. So how do you get your kids to use {and maybe even love} them? With Hot Dots Jr.!

hot dots jr pen and cards

Hot Dots Jr. is basically a flash card game. There are packs of cards with different themes and each card has an easy to understand question and three answers underneath. The child determines their answer & then uses the Pen- either Ace or Kat {a dog & cat, respectively} to select what they believe is the correct answer. If they get it wrong, the pen’s eyes turn red & a buzzer sounds, along with a phrase like “Try again!”. If they get it right, though, the eyes turn green and they are awarded with praise!

Shane loves Hot Dots Jr. so much that within a week of receiving Ace & 1 set of cards to review, we had already purchased two more sets! {We now have Beginning Phonics, Numbers & Counting and The Alphabet.} He gets so excited when he gets an answer right & it makes him want to do more cards!

correct answer hot dots jr

Green eyes- he got it right!

You may have to participate in this activity with your child depending on their age because some reading is involved. You’ll have to tell your child what the question is for the card- for example, the phonics set has both the questions “What has the same beginning sound?” and “What has the same end sound?”, so if your child can’t read yet they won’t know what question they need to answer. However, I love doing things like this with Shane anyway so the participation is actually a benefit to me! And, some of the other sets don’t really require any reading, like the numbers one that shows a picture and you select how many of the item are in the picture. Either way, anything that gets Shane excited about doing flash cards is perfection in my book!

This activity is great for a large age range and is geared toward kids 3-7. But older kids can have fun too- in fact, they have another whole line just called “Hot Dots” for older kids ages 7 & up.

Buy It: You can find Hot Dots Jr. Card Sets & Ace and Kat pens on the Educational Insights website. Card sets are $14.99 each & pens are $12.99 each.

Win It: One lucky reader will win their own pen & card set! Just enter using the simple form below. Good luck!

It’s Never Too Late to Finish School with Ivy Bridge College! {& $1,000 Tuition Giveaway}

When I found out that I was pregnant with Shane, I was in college. My world revolved around work, class, and sorority events, and of course my fiancee. I was frequently having 18 hour days- starting out with 8 hour shifts at work, then 6 hours of class, then a sorority event to attend in the evenings & an hour drive home every night.

{I was four months pregnant in this picture, hence the look of complete & utter exhaustion}

When I found out I was pregnant, it was January, and by the end of that semester I was miserable. I was waddling around in the heat {it was over 100 degrees daily by the end of the semester} and I was 7 months pregnant trying to navigate a huge campus with bad parking options. Every day, I wished that I had taken online classes. They would have helped me so much during that time.

Once Shane came around, I did start taking online classes. I wanted to stay home with him, so I enrolled in online courses through my university & kept going for another year that way. Unfortunately, at that point there were some issues with my financial aid and it was pulled completely. I couldn’t afford to continue school, and had to withdraw for the time being.

While I wish I would have been able to finish school, I know it’s never too late. I don’t intend on having an actual career for quite some time- at least until Shane is in high school if not later- so I have no immediate need for a college degree. &I’ve seen people go back to school later in life- in fact, my mom is a student right now! She just finished up a couple of years at the community college & starts at the same university I was attending this Spring. I’m so proud of her, and she is the perfect example of why it’s never too late to get your degree.

Like I said, I’m in no rush, but at the same time I actually like school. I have been wanting to take a course at a time, that way it’s not overwhelming with everything else going on, and that way I can start chipping away at the remaining 20-something credits I have left to graduate. That’s why I’m going to be taking a class at Ivy Bridge College next semester! {I thought about enrolling this time, but with the wedding, I figured I’d better wait.}

ivy bridge college

Ivy Bridge College {IBC} is a great option for Moms who want to go back to school. In fact, 50% of their students are mothers! IBC is flexible so you can keep your current job or keep staying at home with your kids, but you can still continue your education at your own pace. &They offer support services including a free online private community dedicated to students who are Moms where they can support each other. I think that’s such a brilliant tool & that every school should have that!

They also offer weekly success coaching including career planning, resume writing & interviewing skills, free tutoring, personalized academic advising & the ability to earn a college degree in as little as 17 months. They are designed for you to earn your associate’s degree there and then transfer to over 150 partner schools. They make transferring easy with their clear transfer agreements & make sure that you don’t waste time on courses that won’t transfer.

So what does it cost? About 1/3 of what it costs to attend other private schools. &Once you have your degree, you’ll see return on your investment- those with an associate’s degree earn 20% more & those with a bachelor’s earn 65% more than those with just a high school diploma.

Want even more reason to check out Ivy Bridge? What about a $1,000 tuition discount?

Learning with Leo’s Pad!

Shane loves using the iPad, and I love letting him, provided that he’s using the right apps. I don’t mind him playing “just for fun” games sometimes, but typically I prefer to have him play games that are educational. He likes to try new apps a lot, but many of them end up getting deleted after the first time we play with them. Whether it’s because they aren’t as child-appropriate as they should be {any game that says “stupid” or makes gross noises falls into that category- he’s a three year old boy, so he needs no further encouragement to make those sounds} or because they provide little to no educational value, we delete more apps than we keep.

One that we’ve kept, love, and play with all the time is Leo’s Pad! Leo’s Pad is actually an “appisode” rather than a normal game, so it is basically an interactive TV show on your iPad! It’s educational, fun, and keeps Shane’s attention for a long time. In fact, he plays that app almost every time that he uses the iPad because he likes it so much.

leo's pad

Leo’s Pad is about a little boy named Leo {the young version of Leonardo da Vinci}  who likes to invent things. The first appisode finds Leo planning for Galley’s Birthday {Galley, who loves to look at the stars, is of course a young version of Galileo Galilei}. The appisode is basically a TV show, but at certain points in the “show” it stops for an interactive game. For example:

-In the beginning, Leo must find his dragon, Cinder. He asks for the player’s help finding her, and gives clues using shapes and colors for what she may be hiding behind.

-Leo asks for the player’s help to build the telescope for Galley. He encourages the player to use certain shapes, such as a rectangle or a parallelogram, and the player has to fit the pieces together.

As the episode continues, there are several more games for the player to participate in, covering such topics as shapes, letter identification, word building, counting, and puzzles. Each game enhances the episode and allows for interactive learning while enjoying a show that teaches as well.

kid playing ipad game

While I know that Shane isn’t going to know everything about Leonardo da Vinci from playing this app, I love that it introduces him to important figures from history & science. I like the early introduction as it will make it easier for him to learn about them later {and it’ll make him more interested in them as well}. And I know that Shane is learning and practicing his skills now when he counts cloud puffs, finds letters in the sky & tries to make words by putting letters together.

Shane’s artwork- a birthday card for Galley!

And on top of all of the educational aspects, the graphics are completely amazing. I honestly think that the app’s graphics are better than several TV shows I’ve seen. The depth is unreal, the colors are beautiful, and it’s very fluid, unlike a lot of apps.

Shane draws a rocket in Leo’s Pad 2: Rocket to the Stars

If you have a preschooler & an iPad, you need Leo’s Pad! The first appisode is available for free in the iTunes store, and the second one, Leo’s Pad 2: Rocket to the Stars is available for just $1.99. More episodes are coming soon, as is a full parent’s dashboard where you will be able to follow your child’s progress with the app.

What is your favorite type of app for preschoolers?

Learning Resources All About Me Family Counters: Where Will You Take Your Family?

We are excited to introduce you to the new Learning Resources’ All About Me— Family Counters! Coming soon in 2013! Guess where we are!

All About Me Family Counters

Shane is at an age where he is very adamant about our whole family doing things. For instance, when I say, “Shane, you have to stop talking now so Mommy can go night-night,” his first response is to ask if Daddy & Bella have to go to bed, too. If I say we’re going to go somewhere, he asks who is going & informs me that Bella isn’t going because she’s a dog. Basically, he’s working hard right now to figure out where everyone’s place is in the family- when is Bella’s role different or the same? When does Shane have to do what the rest of the family is doing, and when can he ignore us and play?

3372_FamilyCounters3_sh

So when we heard about the new All About Me Family Counters I knew Shane would love them! He loves playing with “guys” {little figurines} and these are basically guys that not only represent our family, but allow him to take us on adventures! The other day, we used our All About Me Family Counters to go on a “Flat Stanley Project”-esque adventure!

As you can see, we were able to get a mini version of our own little family! We have Mommy & Daddy, Shane {who was so excited that his “guy” was green- his favorite color!} and of course, Bella Notte. Shane’s been using them a lot to role play- I watched him the other day as he had “me” put “Shane” to bed by reading him a story & giving him a hug and kiss.

We only have 1 set of our family, but if you buy them they come with 72 counters that are perfect for patterning, counting, and sorting! And of course, you can take them on adventures as well!

As soon as these counters are made available on January 18, 2013, Learning Resources will be starting a great contest! Be sure to check out Learning Resources on Facebook, Twitter & Pinterest so that you can hear about the contest when it goes live!

Where will you take YOUR “family”?

Note: I received a sample of the counters to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.
