Sound the Octo-Alert! New Disney Jr. Octonauts Toys

We’re a Disney Jr. family. If Shane’s watching TV, there’s a 95% chance it’s that channel- whether it’s Doc McStuffins, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Gaspard & Lisa, or the new Henry Hugglemonster. One of Shane’s absolute favorite shows is Octonauts, so when we had the chance to review some of the new toys available now at Toys R Us!

We received four toys & I honestly don’t know which is Shane’s favorite.

Octonauts Octo-Pod Playset Front and Back

The Octonauts Octopod Playset comes with several characters {including Captain Barnacles, Kwazii, GUP-A, &sea creatures} as well as some play pieces, including a clip-on Octo-Alert that plays sound! Shane loves acting out scenes from the show {real ones & ones that he’s made up} and plays with this often. I like that you can play on either side of the toy, making it easy to play with him. {$34.99}

Gup-B

The Gup-B Mission Vehicle works on land & in the water, and comes with color-changing creatures, Kwazii, and a rescue tool. Shane loves making Gup-B open his mouth & he uses the set to add to the scenes he recreates with the Octopod. {$14.99}

Octonauts Octo-Compass

The Octo-Compass probably gets the most use of all because Shane just walks around pushing the button over & over. He loves making it play sounds from the show & I have to say that I’m impressed by the sound quality- usually toys like that are muffled or sound distorted but this one sounds just like the show. {$12.99}

Barnacles and Turnip

The Rescue Assortment- Barnacles & Turnip set quickly became Shane’s new favorite bath set. You can use it out of the tub, too, but Turnip is a water-squirter so Shane immediately threw the whole set into the tub. The sea creatures change color in warm water, and Shane’s been using the bathroom sink to try to flood the house play with his creatures even when it’s not bath time. {$9.99}

All of these toys still get played with daily, and Shane always has a new scene to act out after he watches Octonauts!

Buy It: The Octonauts line of toys {which includes these and many others} is available now at Toys R Us.

Be sure to catch Octonauts on Disney Jr. {check your local listings for times} & check the show out on Facebook!

Note: I received the toys mentioned to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

Finding Dory To Dive Into Theaters In 2015!

2015 is going to be an amazing year. Three of my favorite movies of all time are getting sequels. The Avengers, Pirates of the Caribbean and now Finding Nemo are all releasing sequels in what I’m sure will be Disney’s biggest box-office year ever- primarily because I intend to see each movie about a million times.

finding dory

On Tuesday, plans for Finding Dory were announced &while the movie won’t be released until Thanksgiving weekend 2015, I’m already having fun stalking social media for updates. Here’s the latest:

When Dory said “just keep swimming” in 2003’s Oscar®-winning film “Finding Nemo,” she could not have imagined what was in store for her (not that she could remember). Ellen DeGeneres, voice of the friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish, revealed details today about Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Dory”—an all-new big-screen adventure diving into theaters on Nov. 25, 2015.

“I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time,” said DeGeneres. “I’m not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating ‘Toy Story 16.’ But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It’s got a lot of heart, it’s really funny, and the best part is—it’s got a lot more Dory.”

Director and Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton takes audiences back to the extraordinary underwater world created in the original film. “There is no Dory without Ellen,” said Stanton. “She won the hearts of moviegoers all over the world—not to mention our team here at Pixar. One thing we couldn’t stop thinking about was why she was all alone in the ocean on the day she met Marlin. In ‘Finding Dory,’ she will be reunited with her loved ones, learning a few things about the meaning of family along the way.”

According to Stanton, “Finding Dory” takes place about a year after the first film, and features returning favorites Marlin, Nemo and the Tank Gang, among others. Set in part along the California coastline, the story also welcomes a host of new characters, including a few who will prove to be a very important part of Dory’s life.

“Finding Nemo” won the 2003 Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature; the film was nominated for three additional Oscars® (Best Writing, Original Screenplay; Best Music, Original Score; Best Sound Editing). It was also nominated for a Golden Globe® Award for Best Motion Picture–Comedy or Musical. In 2008, the American Film Institute named “Finding Nemo” among the top 10 greatest animated films ever made. At the time of its release, “Finding Nemo” was the highest grossing G-rated movie of all time. It’s currently the fourth highest grossing animated film worldwide. The film has more than 16 million Likes on Facebook, and Dory—with more than 24 million—is the most Liked individual character from a Disney or Disney•Pixar film.

DeGeneres’ distinctive comic voice has resonated with audiences from her first stand-up comedy appearances through her work today on television, in film and in the literary world. Her syndicated talk show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” is in its 10th season and has earned 38 Daytime Emmy® Awards. DeGeneres has won 12 People’s Choice Awards and the Teen Choice Award for Choice Comedian for three consecutive years. Additionally, her show won two Genesis Awards and a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Talk Show Episode. For her unforgettable turn as Dory, DeGeneres was nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance.

I love Nemo, but my favorite character has always been Dory & I can’t wait to see a whole lot more of her! Be sure to follow Finding Dory on Facebook & Twitter for updates as they come out!

Guest Post: My Disney Fairy Tale Wedding

Guest post by Elizabeth Atwood from Rock-A-Bye Parents

I was born into a Disney loving family. It was no surprise that in 1995 when Walt Disney World opened their wedding pavilion, and really jumped into the wedding planning business, that my mother started dreaming of my Disney wedding. The fact that I was just finishing up elementary school was a moot point. Fast forward many years to when I meet my Prince Charming and marriage comes up. I told Jason right at the start that we had to get married in Disney. Jason’s not much of a wedding person, so he didn’t really care where it was as long as we got married. We decided on December 23, 2005 and I planned for two years. There was no detail that went unnoticed. A few months before the wedding we even flew down to Disney to have a planning session. While there we went over everything, had a site visit, and taste tested all of our food. By the time the big day came Disney had everything under control and all I had to focus on was enjoying my day.

The morning of our wedding started very early. Our photographers picked us up at 6:00 a.m. for a special photo shoot in the Magic Kingdom. We met performing opposite each other in a performance of Carousel, so the fact that we could get pictures taken on a real carousel made it a must do. We got some amazing photos around the castle as well.

When our time in the Magic Kingdom was up we were taken to Epcot to meet up with our wedding party. Our ceremony was at 9 a.m. in the American Adventure Rotunda. The site is stunning and the Christmas decorations were a nice bonus since they went so well with my Christmas theme. We had thought about using the Wedding Pavilion, but it just didn’t feel right to me. I love that we got to have our wedding in one of the theme parks. Now every time we go back we can visit where we got married. I can go in and even tell you exactly where we stood during the ceremony. We were married by a wonderful minister fondly known as Rev. Jack. He did a fantastic job. From the way he acted, and the extras he put into the ceremony that we wrote, you would have thought that he had known us since we were little kids.

After the ceremony our guests were taken up stairs to the VIP Room for pastry items and drinks while we took more pictures. When we had finished all of the family shots we went outside to take some pictures in Epcot. Most of the pictures were taken around the Italy Pavilion. While we were taking pictures the Cast Members were getting ready for the day. As we were finishing up a Cast Member, that was setting up one of the food and drink stands, called us over. He congratulated us on our wedding and told us that he wanted to give us a toast. He handed each of us a Strawberry Bellini to toast with. It was such a wonderful and magical moment.

When our pictures were done we went to join our guests, but first we went into the dining room that was connected to the lounge where our guests were. I like to refer to the dinning room as the dish room because it has a lot of built in china cabinets displaying crystal and china pieces. If you’ve seen the movie The American President then you’ll know what I’m talking about. They took us here partly to give us a breather, and to let us eat some of the pastries, but they also wanted to give us a chance to see our wedding cake. I had hand drawn a basic idea of what I wanted for my wedding cake. I had asked for some color in the ribbon, but had said to use white frosting because my mother thought anything else was too much. Well, the Grand Floridan Bakery (they do all the wedding cakes) had loved my idea and really ran with it. It was the most amazing cake, and I later hated cutting into it, but what was inside was really good too!

After our breather we immediately had our first dance, and then it was time for lunch (if you could call our huge meal that). The food was wonderful. My favorite part was between the salad and our main meal when every guest received their very own individual ice sculptor (shaped like a star) with raspberry sorbet in it. We had to throw in some special touches that only Disney could give us. When our meal was over we did some family portraits, and then cake. After that it was pretty much over since we didn’t have any dancing.

My wedding day truly was one of the most amazing days of my life, and I honestly would give a lot to do it again. A lot of people think of Disney and they picture a corny wedding where the bride and groom are married by Mickey. That is so far from the truth though. Yes, you can have the characters come to the reception (we did not), but Disney can truly create the most beautiful and upscale weddings. On my wedding day they helped make all of my fairy tale dreams come true, and I wouldn’t have done it any other way.

Our Mini Disneyland Vacation

A few weeks ago, we had the opportunity to take a mini-vacation as a family. It couldn’t have come at a better time, since we’ve been really busy lately and really needed some time to just be away & enjoy some family time. Between wedding planning, work, and daily life, we haven’t had much time to connect lately and so we took a much needed road trip to Disneyland!

IMG_4862

There’s a whole lotta nothin’ between Vegas & Anaheim.

On Friday, we picked up Justin from work {it’s on the way to Cali} & headed out to our hotel, the Hotel Menage. It wasn’t exactly a luxury hotel {No mini-bar?! But I wanted a cold Snickers..}, but it was really close to Disneyland & it was clean & had the bare essentials, so it was just fine. They also have a really good breakfast buffet, something that matters a lot to us when we travel!

Disneyland Castle

On Saturday morning, we woke up & got ready. We headed over to Disneyland & Shane immediately wanted to find some of the rides we’d looked at on the computer the day before. First we went on “The Rocket Ships” {Shane’s name}:

Disneyland Astro Orbitor

Then we made our way to Dumbo the Flying Elephant. Shane loved Dumbo & cried when it was over! {Don’t worry, we got back in line later & went again.}

Dumbo the Flying Elephant Ride

I got photo bombed by an elephant.

Then, Shane decided he just had to ride the The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ride next, which was all the way across the park. &Since the only maps we had were on our phones, which couldn’t hold a signal, it took us awhile to get there. &The best part? Once we got there, Shane freaked out & didn’t want to ride it anyway. Sigh. {Yeah, I totally rode it by myself.}

At least on the way we found some pretty friendly ducks & Shane watched them for a solid twenty minutes while we tried to get un-lost.

Ducks at Disneyland

I love that you can see Shane’s shadow in this picture as he watches the ducks.

He decided he wanted to ride the Astro Orbitor {rockets} again, and afterwards we stopped for lunch at the Tomorrowland Terrace, where Shane got to watch the Star Wars Jedi Training Academy. He’s never seen Star Wars but knew that Darth Vader was a bad guy, so he wasn’t so sure about it at first. But a few minutes in, he got really into it, and then he was sad when it was over!

Disneyland Soundsational Parade

After lunch, we caught the end of Mickey’s Soundsational Parade, something that Shane remembered & loved from our last visit. He was bummed that he missed Mickey {his favorite &the first in the line-up} but loved the rest of it!

Disneyland Carousel 2

We rode a few more rides after that, including the Carousel {twice}, Dumbo again, and the Jungle Cruise. After the Jungle Cruise, we stopped for our first-ever Dole Whips. If you’ve never heard of them, they’re these delicious soft-serve pineapple sorbet treats & you can get them by themselves or as a float on top of pineapple juice as well. They are even more amazing than they sound, which is why the line to get one rivals any of the rides at the park. They’re worth it though!

As we enjoyed our Dole Whips, we suddenly heard the familiar music for the Soundsational Parade- and we caught it from the very beginning this time! As much as Shane loved the rides at the park, I really think that the parade is his favorite thing about Disneyland. &I can’t blame him, as I apparently loved it as a kid too.

Dad and daughter at Disney world

My dad & I watching the parade at Disney World {circa 1991}

Once we stopped in the gift shop {of course!}, an experience you can read more about in my guest post on the YesVideo blog, it was time to head back to our hotel. Shane was sad to leave the park, but definitely tired & ready to go to bed. We made a pit stop at Chick-fil-A for the first time since we always hear about them & don’t have any locations here, and Justin totally fell in love.

Astro Orbitors Disneyland

Once we got to the hotel, Shane barely took his shoes off before he fell asleep! We woke up Sunday morning, stopped at the hotel’s restaurant for breakfast, and then headed home. Shane got sick on the ride home so that was rough, but the rest of the weekend was just as magical as we’ve come to expect from Disneyland!

It was so nice to take a weekend admist the chaos to make some family memories. While Shane only wanted to go on four different rides {about a million times each}, and we got lost & he got sick the next day, the main things that we will remember are the smiles when it was our turn to go on a ride, the feeling of the air on our face as we spun in circles above the crowds, the amazement in his eyes as characters he recognized walked past, and the many hugs & “thank you’s” that showed us just how truly happy Shane was for the experience. At his age, there’s no telling whether or not Shane will remember this trip when he’s grown up, but I know I’ll never forget it.

Have you ever been to Disneyland?

Note: I would like to thank YesVideo, who provided a stipend to cover a portion of this trip & allowed us to make wonderful memories as a family.

About the movie:

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well.
