10 Minute Craft: Nature Bags!

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Elmer’s. I received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

Shane & I love doing crafts together. Unfortunately, I’m not that crafty & prefer to do simple projects. Fortunately, he isn’t picky & will happily sit down to do anything that involves craft supplies. Just getting to play & experiment with glue, scissors, special papers, stickers, glitter, pom poms, whatever is fun to him & so I try to do at least one craft per week {although we often do more}.

Since the season is changing & lots of things are happening in nature, I thought we’d make a super simple Nature Bag craft this week! The goal is for him to take the bag with when we go on walks so that he can easily collect nature items that he finds, like leaves, rocks, or flowers. I used to collect these things as a little kid so I wanted him to have the chance to do the same.

My Nature Bag- Materials

Materials:

-Paper Bag {preferably one with handles, but all we had were lunch sacks}
-Elmer’s Naturals Pourable Glue
-Assorted nature-themed objects {we used feathers; you could also use pressed flowers, leaves or twigs}
-Pictures of nature items {I searched for “flowers”, “pinecone”, and “leaves” on Microsoft Word’s clip art section but Google Images is another great resource}

My Nature Bag- How To
How To:

Present your child with the materials & assist them {if needed} with gluing them on however they want. Allow glue to dry fully before taking on your next journey! As an added bonus, you can go through their “treasures” once you’re home & teach them about each object.

10 Minute Craft- My Nature Bag! by @NotQuiteSusie
We love nature, so this project was great for us. Whether we’re recycling, growing {or trying to grow} our own plants, enjoying the flowers in our backyard or using natural ingredients in our everyday lives, we try to be conscious of nature whenever possible. {Yes, I was raised by a hippie. But I’m glad!}

Lots of companies lately have been switching to more natural ingredients, using less harmful chemicals & more sustainable materials. Elmer’s is one of those companies, who has a line called Elmer’s Naturals. The line includes both pourable glue & glue sticks and works just like the stuff you grew up with.

Elmer’s Naturals Pourable School Glue: Consists of 99% natural ingredients. The primary ingredient is plants-specifically, American-grown corn, which is a rapidly renewable resource. Even the bottle is made up of 25% post-consumer recycled materials, and the label contains 20% recycled paper, is printed with soy-based ink, and is applied with a natural rubber adhesive.

Elmer’s Naturals Glue Sticks: Made up of more than 88% natural ingredients, this soy bean based formula also includes a rapidly renewable resource. The sticks are made of 25% post-consumer recycled plastic, the labels are printed with soy ink on FSC-certified paper, and the card is made from 100% recycled paper board.

I love that we can now feel really good using a product that we already use all the time, just by using their Naturals line that has the same efficiency as the Original line. &Shane loves that the label is green, so there’s that.

Right now, Elmer’s is hosting a Pin to Win sweepstakes where you can win a Elmer’s Naturals prize pack & a $100 gift card! It’s easy to enter, just follow the guidelines below:

How do you include nature in your life?

Celebrating Earth Day with Green Kid Crafts!

I love crafts. I have a closet that contains almost exclusively crafting items, from stickers to pipe cleaners to glue guns. &Shane has picked up my love of crafting- he enjoys making something from nothing, and either playing with or displaying his creations. I try to encourage this love, but I’m not that creative. I can duplicate a craft I find on Pinterest or put some stickers on anything, but when it comes to thinking of crafts to do, I come up blank. That’s why I rely on subscription boxes that include full projects and include step-by-step directions that even I can follow.

food adventures

We received a Food Adventures themed Discovery Box from Green Kid Crafts recently and Shane absolutely loved it! We have used a few different craft boxes & they are like comparing apples to oranges, but I liked how this one really was very green. Whenever possible, the craft supplies were eco-friendly, organic or recycled- even the bags that each craft came in were plant based biodegradable bags.

Food Adventures Discovery Box

Our Food Adventures box included four activities: a fishing game, a mosaic tile coaster, growing organic basil, and sprouting organic alfalfa. Each activity required a moderate amount of parental guideance {with a three-year-old, anyway} but each one was right on target for my son to be able to complete.

Planting and sprouting

First, we planted our basil & soaked our alfalfa! I’m hoping that when the sprouts are ready to eat {in about 5 days}, Shane will want to try them. &Same with the basil, although that will take a bit longer to be ready to eat. Doing this craft was a great opportunity to remind him of what it takes to grow a plant- and it was interesting because the sprouts don’t actually use soil!

Tile Mosaic

We did the tile coaster next, which he had fun with. First we sorted the tiles out by color and counted how many we had of each color {Shane was thrilled that we had mostly green} and then Shane made his mosaic! He could hardly wait for it to dry before using it as a coaster for his drink!

TIle Coaster

We made the fishing game next, which I forgot to take pictures of, but he loves fishing games & our homemade version was no exception!

Discover More Guide

When we were done, we looked at the Discover More Guide, which comes with each box but is different each time. Since this box’s theme was food, the guide included recipe ideas, and Shane picked one out to try tomorrow! Our particular box also included a sample of Annie’s cheddar bunnies- and even some coupons for popular “green” food companies!

Playing with Green Kid Crafts Kit

The whole kit was a great learning experience and a fun thing to spend time together doing. I love when we get boxes like this in the mail because it gives us a reason to sit at the table together & create, which is a really fun bonding experience for us. While Green Kid Crafts supplied us with this box for review purposes, I am actually looking into purchasing my own subscription because we enjoyed it so much.

Guest Post: The Savvy Mum’s Guide to Upcycling

Penny pinching is no longer something associated with Scrooge or the very poor – in these times of recession almost everyone is jumping on the new ‘make do and mend’ bandwagon.

Sites such as netvouchercodes.co.uk help us find discounts on many items. Combining this with living frugally and making as much use out of everything as possible leave us with far more spare pennies to pay the bills, spend on treats or save up for a rainy day.

Sewing Upcycling

Upcycling is the new craze sweeping the nation. The basic premise behind it is that everything potentially has more than one use, so we can take our old clutter and, with a little imagination, some glue and some elbow grease, turn it into something completely different that is hopefully either more useful or more attractive.

Especially useful in cases of wishing to re-vamp home décor on a shoestring, upcycling is fun, creative and almost free.

If you own a sewing machine you have immediately opened up a whole world of possibilities for upcycling. Old jumpers, pillow cases, sheets and more can be turned into something completely different with just a few snips of the scissors and a little sewing.

Check out simple patterns for cushion covers, sleeves for iPods or Kindles or make new clothes for children or dolls out of adult clothing.

Even if your sewing skills leave something to be desired, experiment by making children’s fancy dress costumes – as they will more than likely only be worn once or twice they don’t have to be too durable and it gives you chance to practice following a pattern.

In the world of upcycling possibilities spray-paint is your friend. Grab a few cans in various colours and go wild, transforming ornaments, shelving or other pieces of furniture.

Be sure to always work in a well-ventilated area. If you are planning on spraying a larger item of furniture try to test the paint on a hidden area before you start to check what effect you are likely to get. A whole old set of plain wooden kitchen chairs can each be sprayed a different bold primary colour to create a modern kitchen table set.

You can also save money when it comes to buying paint or other DIY accessories as there’s bound to be a voucher code for a DIY shop near you.

Old ladders can be sanded down, re-painted and set to use as a funky new set of display shelves; newspaper can be utilised as wrapping paper or made into attractive looking gift bags; empty jars can be decorated and made into handy storage containers.

The list goes on and on. Take some time out to view your clutter with a creative eye before discarding, check out the internet for hints and tips and compare notes with friends. You may find you never throw anything away again.

Guest Post: Overcoming Your Recycling Nightmare

All Hallows’ Eve is here again and that means Jack-o-Lanterns, trick-or-treaters, and eating so much candy corn you feel sick. But it’s also a good idea to remember that scaring the life out of those closest to you and those brave souls that dare knock on your door is a good way to spend the holiday. So if you want to have the freakiest looking house around there’s no need to go down to the local retailer, you probably have everything you need laying around your home.

Recycled Halloween craft decorations

Phantom Photographs
Don’t forget to include all the people in your home when celebrating Halloween, even those who are stuck in photographs and portraits. By using old paper found around the house you can make, devil horns, fangs, and masks to be stuck to any pictures or portraits you may have in your home. It’s best to use low-tack artists’ tape to stick any paper onto pictures, but be careful if you try this with any expensive paintings or taking the tape off may be a truly frightening experience.

Gigantic Arachnids
Spiders are scary, there’s just so much that seems wrong with them. It’s hard to pinpoint just what it is; the spindly legs, the mass of eyes, the furry body. But imagine a giant spider traversing your shed or climbing a tree; that will look truly terrifying. First stuff a garbage bag full of leaves, newspaper, or another soft material, and fasten the end to create the body. The legs are made by stuffing down the length of a garbage bag, and rolling the bag over itself into a long cylindrical shape. Tie the end with a cable tie or piece of string and repeat this seven more times, finally attach the legs to the body with glue.

Ghost Lanterns
Instead of throwing away your old milk cartons, why not transform them into a set of lanterns to give your porch a creepy glow. Use a black marker pen to draw a shocking face onto the front of the carton, and cut a hole in the bottom. Put an artificial candle or a couple of Christmas lights through the hole in the bottom of the carton to create the glowing effect. Place the lanterns in your porch to create a mystifying aura that is sure to give your entrance an alarming appearance.

Specimen Jars
Using leftover jars or beakers you may have can be used to turn a table or sideboard into a mad scientist’s workstation. Filling the glass jars with water and a drop or two of food colouring instantly gives the impression that the jars are filled with all sorts of chemicals. Using objects like plastic spiders or dolls heads can give the jars an even more sinister appearance, and combining this with the right mood lighting can make the area feel rather ominous.

If you enjoy crafts you probably have all the equipment needed to make these spooktacular decorations and create a deeply distressing domain.

Connect & Create with Kiwi Crate!

You may have noticed the recent emergence of the box of the month trend: you sign up for a subscription, and then once a month a box of surprise items arrives at your house. These services now exist for beauty items, foods, pretty much anything- including my favorite: kid’s activities.

When I taught at Gymboree, I was an art teacher for a few months. I loved helping little ones create & I saw first hand how beneficial it was for them. I’d love to duplicate the experience at home, but the problem is, I’m not very creative. When I was teaching, I was going off of a lesson plan. I find lots of ideas for things to do with Shane on Pinterest, but by the time I go out & buy all of the supplies I need, it’s cost me an arm & a leg and then I have a whole bag of pipe cleaners to store when I just needed two red ones.

Kiwi Crate, one of the above mentioned monthly subscription boxes, fixes both of those problems for me.

Big and little sets

We received two kits: the Space Hero kit, which included a Superhero cape, a comet, and a Superhero mask, and an individual kit, which included the “My Wings” activity.

kiwi crate instructions

Their large crates come with 2-3 activities centered around a theme, complete with instructions and even tips on how to extend the activity, like with a story or a few related facts.

my wings crate

&It comes with all of the supplies we’ll need to do the activity! For example, the Superhero Cape activity we received included the cape and the felt stickers to put on the cape. I didn’t have to buy a whole pack of felt in all different colors- it was all included. &For the My Wings activity {above}, I received two pieces of crepe paper, a giant pipe cleaner, more pre-cut felt, and elastic straps. Try buying any of that individually at the store!

Super hero mask
{Shane just wasn’t done decorating his mask, apparently!}

The activities are simple enough for Shane {just shy of 3 years old} to do with my help, but interesting enough that I can see a much older kid having fun doing them! The supplies were all of great quality, and the finished product was always adorable!

Kiwi Crate Superhero cape

The Space Hero kit let us make a superhero cape which Shane got to run around in & play pretend, make a “comet” which we played catch with, and create a super hero mask to go with the cape. The My Wings kit allowed us to make crepe paper wings, which allowed him to play pretend and also sparked his imagination when he was deciding what flying creature to be. With the My Wings activity, I also took the opportunity for a mini-lesson about butterflies & metamorphosis.

Kiwi Crate Super Hero Cape

I love these kits because not only do they help Shane learn and allow him to create, but they give us something to do together. I am always looking for fun things for us to do together that will make memories &I know that every time he wears his cape, or throws his comet, he’ll think of when we made them together.

Kiwi Crate has several ways to enjoy what they have to offer: you can sign up for the monthly subscription, where you get one box shipped directly to your house every month for $19.95 {You can add on a sibling for $7.95 so that there’s enough to go around!}. You can also shop directly for gifts- you can choose from either the Space Hero or Fairy Fun kits for $19.95 each to gift for birthdays or holidays. Also for birthdays, you can purchase Party Packs, which make for great party favors or party activities! You have to buy 6 or more, but you can mix & match the kits and there are 6 options to choose from, starting at just $5 each! You can shop all of the options here.

What type of theme would you like to see in a Kiwi Crate?

Note: I received samples to facilitate this review. All experiences are authentic & all opinions are my own.
