My New Year’s Resolution: Controlling my Asthma Naturally

It’s a New Year, and of course with that comes Resolutions. Many people vow to lose weight on New Year’s, and while that would be nice, my goal is different-  I want to take control of my asthma.

I’ve had asthma for as long as I can remember, but it really started getting bad at the end of high school. That’s when I finally had to start keeping my rescue inhaler on me at all times, and since then it’s gotten worse. In college, I used that rescue inhaler multiple times a day, despite the fact that you’re only supposed to use it a maximum of twice a week.

A couple of months ago, I went to the doctor to finally get it under control. He gave me a preventative inhaler to be used twice daily, a daily steroid medication , and a new rescue inhaler that I’m hoping works better than the old one I had so that I can use it once & not multiple times.

Since getting the new prescriptions and adding an air purifier to my bedroom, my asthma has gotten a lot better. That said, I don’t like having to take three medications every day just to be sure I can continue to breathe. I have started looking into ways to treat my asthma naturally in the hopes that one day I won’t need the medication.

The other night, I couldn’t fall asleep so I started doing research on my phone. I discovered that Vitamins A, B12, C & D are the ones that are thought to help with asthma symptoms. Most of those are found in fish, milk, and eggs: three things I almost never consume. I don’t eat seafood, so I still can’t add in fish, and I’m lactose intolerant so I can’t drink milk. So I needed to find a new way to add those vitamins into my routine.

IMG_4384
All this research reminded me that I needed to refill one of my prescriptions so while I was thinking about it, I quickly refilled it from my phone using the Walgreens app. I love using Walgreens for my prescriptions because it literally takes about two pushes of a button to refill a prescription right from my phone! I tend to forget to refill them a lot so it’s nice that I can do it the minute I remember instead of having to wait until I can call it in or get to the computer. &Since Walgreens sends me an email alert AND sends a push notification to my phone when my refill is due, I usually don’t forget for too long.

IMG_4353
The next day, I went to Walgreens to pick up my prescription. {View the Google+ story of my shop here!} While I was there, I decided to pick up some supplements to start treating my asthma naturally. We bought the Walgreens Finest brand because after doing some research online for the best vitamin brands, they actually came highly recommended even more than a lot of the big name brands! &With my Balance Rewards card, most of them were Buy 1 Get 1 50% off- on top of the already very competitive price.

IMG_4360

Justin & Shane went with and Justin wanted to get some fish oil supplements in addition to my vitamins, too.

IMG_4385
They didn’t actually have any Vitamin A though, so once I got home I opened the Walgreens app back up & searched through there. I still didn’t find Walgreens’ Finest brand, but they did have 11 options so I purchased one & had it shipped to me so I don’t have to go back again.

While I’m sure it’ll take some time to see a huge difference, I’m proud that only a week into the New Year, I’ve taken such a big step toward my goal of finally conquering my asthma. I won’t be stopping my prescriptions any time soon {or without the consent of a doctor} but I am hoping to bridge the gap between what my medications can do &how bad my asthma really is. I’m hoping that by the end of the year, things that currently trigger my asthma {like using household cleaners, going outside in the cold, and even eating certain foods} will no longer give me pause.

What is your New Year’s Resolution?

A Delicious New Year with Daily Chef Bruschetta! #MealsTogether

Justin wakes up at 3:30am for work 5 days a week, so he’s not a stay-up-until-midnight-on-New-Year’s kind of guy. He’s so in the habit of going to bed at 8pm that by 9pm, he’s basically a walking zombie. In the past, I’ve let him go to bed on New Year’s Eve & have just woken him up at about 11:55 to watch the countdown & fireworks with me, but this year was different. His sister & her husband were in town and staying at his parents’ house, and they invited us over for a New Year’s Eve mini-party. I knew that we’d leave before midnight since we have a three-year-old anyway, so I talked Justin into letting us accept the invitation.

I didn’t want to show up empty-handed, but I also didn’t want to make anything complicated. I wasn’t sure what everyone would like, and it had already been such a crazy week with Christmas having just ended {including our second Christmas on Saturday} so I wanted something that I could just pop in the oven & forget about for a bit. When I heard about Daily Chef Bruschetta, available at Sam’s Club, I knew it was the perfect solution. Who doesn’t like bruschetta?

Sam's Club Membership Card

I have been wanting to get a Sam’s Club membership for awhile now so I finally went out & got one! While I was there, I searched for the bruschetta. I found another yummy appetizer option from Daily Chef, but I had my heart set on the bruschetta. When I found it, there were two kinds: Chicken & Bacon, which I know my family would love but I couldn’t eat {I don’t eat bacon}, or Chicken Spinach & Artichoke. I am completely obsessed with Spinach & Artichoke everything- it’s the appetizer we get everywhere- so it was perfect!

Chicken spinach artichoke bruschetta

There were only going to be 6 of us {plus Shane, but he’s a very picky eater so I didn’t count him} at the party so I just got one box. It was giant- it had 32 pieces in it for just $9.95! That was definitely more than enough for our party. We headed for check out along with some other great finds- you can see what we found that Shane was excited about in my G+ album!

New Year's Eve party supplies

The perfect party supplies: Daily Chef Bruschetta, Fudge Covered Oreos & a huge stack of games!

The next day was New Year’s Eve, and Justin went snowboarding in Utah with his dad. When they got back to my in-law’s house, I met up with them with Shane & the bruschetta in tow.

Daily Chef Bruschetta frozen appetizer

Still frozen, but it already looks delicious!

I called ahead to have Justin preheat the oven to 400, and then as soon as I got there I popped them onto a baking sheet & put them in the oven for 12 minutes. While I waited, I loaded up Shane’s plate & mine with the pizza that they’d ordered for the mini-party, and the timing was perfect!

Daily Chef Bruschetta Appetizer

When the bruschetta was done, I could barely wait for it to cool down to eat it. It looked amazing, and I could tell it was going to be delicious! Even so, I underestimated it. The bread was perfect- a hard crust with a soft middle- and while I’ve had some bad luck with frozen spinach & artichoke before, this seriously tasted like I’m used to from restaurants.

_DSC4286

Everyone loved it- they knew that it was frozen, but they couldn’t believe it! A few of us even went back for more.

Daily Chef Bruschetta Collage

We ended up staying & playing games until around 10:30- much later than I expected- and by the time we got home, it was so close to midnight that we just let Shane stay up to ring in the New Year. It was the first time that we were all together at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s & it was definitely one to remember!

If you’re looking for a great appetizer for your next party, be sure to check out Daily Chef Bruschetta!

Go From Drab to Fab with Allegra! #ClearBeauty

It’s Spring, which means my allergies are constant. When my allergies strike, they mostly affect my eyes, which alternate between being teary & being red and dry. So, during allergy season, I sometimes take a break from wearing eye makeup since my teary eyes are going to wipe all of the makeup away anyway. The problem is, I feel completely naked without eye makeup. Here’s why:

before

I’m totally not a fan of sharing this with you but, that’s what I look like during allergy season. Anyway, I am sick of having to feel dreary just because of my allergies, and so I decided it was time to try a new allergy medicine. The one I had been using was completely generic & only had one ingredient of allergy medicines in it, but I had heard from a lot of people that they swear by Allegra. So, I decided to try it out.

coupon

I chose a great time to try it, because as soon as I got to the allergy aisle, I saw a coupon for $2 off! The coupon was only good for the 5ct or 15ct, but that was perfect for me since I didn’t want to commit to a 30ct or higher pack since I’ve never used it & had no clue if it would work for me.

allegra sale

If you’re already an Allegra user, you can also save on the 30ct pack this month at CVS when you use your CVS card! It’s marked down to only $17.99- that’s only 60 cents a day to be allergy-free. Not bad at all!

tools

While I was at CVS, I decided to pick up a couple of new beauty items. My mascara was running low so I decided to try a new one- the one I picked up is supposed to help grow your lashes, so we’ll see! &There was a Revlon sale so I got a second item for half off- I chose a cute eye shadow kit. So I spent $26 on a 15 ct Allegra, lash-growing mascara & eye shadow kit: which was a $5.90 savings between the Allegra coupon & the half-priced eye shadow! {Check out the rest of my shopping trip on Google+!}

cvs

CVS always has great sales on beauty items, but you can find these this week specifically:

-Revlon Cosmetics or Beauty Tools: Buy One, Get One 50% Off
-All Maybelline Face, Eye or Lip Products: Buy One, Get One 50% Off

Once I got home, I took the Allegra immediately. Within an hour {probably even less, but it’s hard to pinpoint} I started immediately feeling better. My eyes stopped tearing up & I stopped sneezing 10 times a minute. &I decided to put on my eye makeup!

after

I finally felt like myself- both because I could have a conversation without sneezing & because I looked like myself. I can’t believe it took me this long to try Allegra! &Now that I can safely use eye makeup without it smearing all over, I think I’m going to head back to CVS for a few more Spring-inspired beauty updates!

{Be sure to check out Allegra on Twitter & Facebook to learn more- or play The Allergy Makeover Game!}

A Healthy Breakfast for the Whole Family Featuring Silk Fruit&Protein! #SilkFruit

I don’t drink milk. Not only do I dislike it, but it makes my stomach hurt. So I drink Silk’s almond milk & soy milk instead. We have Silk in the fridge at any given time, so when I heard they were coming out with a Fruit&Protein drink, which is similar to juice in that it has fruit but that it also packed some soy protein? I knew I had to try it!

I headed to Walmart to pick it up, along with some other ingredients to make a super healthy breakfast for my family! {Be sure to check out my Google+ story to see the rest of my shopping trip!}

I decided to get the Strawberry Banana flavor, since that’s my favorite. From there, I decided to make a breakfast with the same flavor- so I decided on pancakes with sliced strawberries & bananas!

I got some whole grain pancake mix, fresh strawberries & bananas, and of course, the Silk Fruit&Protein. I mixed the batter, Justin manned the griddle, and I sliced up the fruit.

Justin topped his pancakes with light syrup but Shane & I didn’t use any because they were already really good with just the fruit- and a lot healthier that way, too. We all drank the Soy Fruit&Protein, though- and we all loved it!

The Silk Fruit&Protein has a great flavor, but it’s a pretty light flavor- in a good way. &The texture is really smooth, which I liked. I love the Silk Fruit&Protein as a juice alternative- Shane drinks a lot of juice, which is great because it helps him get some fruit servings- but that’s about it. The Silk Fruit&Protein is an excellent source of Vitamins C & D as well as Calcium- and of course, protein! &While we got the Strawberry Banana flavor this time, we’re looking forward to trying the Mango Peach & Mixed Berry!

Make sure to attend the #FruitSilk twitter party on April 19th at 1:00pm EST to learn more about this great new product!

You can learn more about Silk & the new Silk Fruit&Protein on their website, Facebook & Twitter!

What do you serve as a healthy family breakfast?

Feed Your Zoo with Del Monte Products! #iLovemyK9

I don’t know about you, but I love feel-good movies- especially when they have animals in them. I’ve been itching to see We Bought A Zoo since it came to theaters but never got the chance to see it. Now that it’s on DVD & Blu-Ray, I had to have it!

Even better than getting the movie? Saving on the movie! Right now when you purchase 2 specified Del Monte pet food products {which includes 40 lb. bags of Kibbles N’ Bits, 13.5lb. Meow Mix Tender Centers, 24 lb. Original Meow Mix, All Large Sizes of Milo’s Kitchen dog treats, and 75 oz. Milk-Bone treats} you can get $4 off the purchase of We Bought a Zoo on DVD or Blu-Ray! That’s a pretty great deal since we use those products anyway.

coupon

I picked up some Meow Mix for my cat, Thumper, which my Mom was kind enough to adopt from me when I moved in with Justin since he’s highly allergic. I also got some Milo’s Kitchen treats for Bella which she hadn’t had before but I loved the ingredient list so I decided to try them! {By the way, she definitely likes them:}

milo's kitchen treats
So after picking up a few more things {check out the rest of my shopping trip on Google+!} I headed home for a Family Movie Night!

When we got home, we enjoyed some fruit cups right away- Shane loves them & it makes it so much easier to get some fruit into him!

del monte fruit cups
I wanted to make a special yummy snack to eat while we watched the movie, so I decided to make a variation of this Fruit Crumble recipe I found on the Del Monte website. Instead of using canned fruit, I decided to use fruit cups, which worked out really well- but I also used “vegetable spread” instead of butter or margarine, which I think is what yielded the result it did:

nailed it
As you can see I didn’t have any crumbles in my Fruit Crumble- but it was actually still really yummy since it was basically just Del Monte fruit cups baked with a little cinnamon & brown sugar on them. So all was not lost!

I’m including the recipe below, because it would have worked just fine if I would have used butter or margarine instead of vegetable spread!

fruit crumble recipe

Fruit Crumble

Ingredients

  • 2 packages {8 fruit cups} Del Monte® Peaches Fruit Cups
  • 1 package {4 fruit cups} Del Monte® Mixed Fruit Fruit Cups
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine
  • (Optional) low-fat vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt

Directions

  1. 1. Place fruit in 8x8-inch baking dish.
  2. 2. Combine flour, sugar and cinnamon. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly and moist; sprinkle evenly over fruit.
  3. 3. Bake at 375°F, 30 minutes or until topping is crisp and golden. Serve warm with low-fat vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt, if desired.

we bought a zoo
The movie aspect of our movie night had a much better result than the snack! Shane loved the parts with the animals- and so did Bella Notte! She raised her ears each time an animal made noise & even went right up to the screen to sniff their family dog. Justin and I both thought the movie was cute. He liked it, despite feel-good movies not really being his thing, and I though it was absolutely adorable! {Plus, you can’t go wrong when Matt Damon is involved!}

Overall it was a fun family night with a great movie & a still-yummy snack!
