Breathe Easy with Airocide- Featuring Technology Developed by NASA!

My asthma has been mentioned quite a bit in the past, and that’s because it’s a major part of my life. I’ve struggled with it for years &have tried various things to get it under control. While I’ve had to put some treatments on hold for the time being since we’re trying to conceive, one of the biggest ways that I’ve learned to treat my symptoms is by breathing clearer air.

I live in the middle of a city, so there’s a lot of air pollution. Add in my dog who I’m convinced sheds her entire coat daily, in the most random spots of the house, and you’ve got a great setting for an asthma attack. But while I can’t control the air outside, or glue my dog’s fur to her to keep it from shedding, I can clean the dirty air.

I’ve used {and reviewed} an air purifier before, and it’s still one that I like & use. But that air purifier got bumped down to second place recently when I was given the opportunity to try out my new favorite, the Airocide Air Purifier.

Airocide Air Purifier

About Airocide:

The technology behind the Airocide® Air Purifier was born in NASA when space station astronauts needed to eliminate the ethylene gas produced by their fruits onboard shuttles.  What was developed was an air purification technology that eliminates 99% of ethylene gas from the air without filters or any harmful emissions. Commercial units were then introduced in 1998 to food packers, florists and grocery chains to extend the shelf life of their products.

Further testing showed the Airocide® Air Purifier was virtually 100% effective in destroying Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) – basically the bad stuff that’s emitted by products you have around your home, like aerosol sprays, cleaning supplies, disinfectants, hobby supplies, dry-cleaned clothing, paints and paint thinners, strippers, pesticides and even air fresheners. Furthermore, Airocide Air Purifier eliminates pollen, dust mites, viruses, bacteria and other biological pollutants traditional air purifiers couldn’t even attempt. These findings were truly a breath of fresh air.

In 2003 the Airocide Air Purifier was introduced into hospitals, clinics, emergency rooms, dental offices, daycare centers and prisons to help stop the spread of infectious disease. Further studies consistently demonstrate dramatic reductions in mold and bacteria counts.

Since I’m not very good at explaining {or understanding} science, check out this video that explains the technology involved:

My thoughts:

As recommended, I’ve been using the Airocide in the room that I spend the most time in- the bedroom. Airocide asked me to wait about 2 months to write about them so that I could feel the full effects first, but I have to say that I could have written this post after just two weeks. I felt a difference almost immediately in the air quality- and while it seems like it’d be hard to tell since it’s air, it’s quite easy for me.

I used to reach for my inhaler almost every night as I was laying in bed to go to sleep. Going into that room, even if it was fur-free {which was rare, but did happen sometimes}, would always trigger my asthma. Sometimes I even woke up in the middle of the night needing it. Since I started using the Airocide, I have almost never used it while in that room at all. The only times I have used it are when I’m vacumming {and kicking up fur & dust faster than the Airocide can purify the air} and on a couple of occasions where my asthma had already been bad all day.

I also love the Airocide because:

It’s attractive- it’s not an eyesore like most air purifiers & even looks nice in my room. We have the decorative sleeve on it, but even without it it’s a fun, modern looking design.

It’s clean- unlike my first air purifier, it doesn’t need constant dusting on the unit or the wall behind it.

It’s low maintenance- my old purifier has two filters: one that you replace every 2 months & one is every 6 months or so. That’s a lot to keep track of. With the Airocide, you just replace the Reaction Chambers when the light starts blinking, which is about once a year. &While the annual replacement costs $99, it’s actually less than I spend on filters for the other machine over the course of the year.

It’s quiet- I’ve had it in my room for 2 months, and Justin just discovered that it made any sound at all the other day when we turned off the fan in our room. When the fan is on, even on low, you can’t hear the Airocide at all. &Even if the fan is off, you can barely hear it.

It works- the results speak for themselves! Airocide even offers a 60-day money-back guarantee so if it doesn’t work for you like it did for me, you can return it risk-free.

Whether you or someone in your family suffers from asthma, allergies, or eczema or you just want cleaner air, I can’t recommend the Airocide enough. If we could afford it, we’d get one for every room in the house, but for now I’m definitely sleeping easy!

Buy It: You can purchase the Airocide on their website for $799 {or monthly payments of $99.99}. Order today & receive the decorative sleeve for free as well as free shipping.

Find the Real Cost of an Illness or Injury with Aflac!

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Aflac. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

I’ve been lucky with health insurance- I still qualify for it through my Dad, and he has pretty awesome insurance. Until next year, I am covered, and it’s a good thing too. With my asthma, I pay a $80 copay every two months for two inhalers, $5 a month for the medicine that prevents flare-ups {which I recently went off of}, and $10 for doctor visits. Without insurance? I’d be paying $100 per inhaler, $125+ for a doctor visit & over $80 a month for the same medication. Oh & when I had Shane? Instead of the $17,000 bill they sent us {C-Section}, we paid just $300. That was pretty awesome.

So it may seem weird that I’m really interested in what Aflac has to offer, since I already have great coverage. Well, insurance doesn’t cover everything, and there are always additional costs with major accidents or illnesses that insurance just doesn’t touch on. Aflac calls this the “Real Cost” and on their website, you can find several examples of these. For example, check out the Real Cost that we’d have if I broke my leg:

The Real Cost of a Broken Leg{Click to enlarge}

As you can see, deductibles, medication, and physical therapy can easily add up to $8,000 during recovery. Luckily I’d probably be okay with many of the household expenses since I work from home sitting at a computer so I wouldn’t be out of work, but it’s still not easy to manage typical bills while juggling all of the treatment bills. Even if I only consider the $8,000- that is a lot of money to just hand over for treatment. It’s no wonder that the leading cause of bankruptcy is medical debt.

So what can you do? Other than avoid breaking your leg, you can consider getting a policy with Aflac. While your main health insurance pays for your doctors & hospitals, Aflac pays cash benefits directly to you to help with daily expenses when you’re sick or hurt. Rates &benefits are predetermined & set regardless of your other insurance- and your rate doesn’t go up when you file a claim.

I wish that we had Aflac a few months ago when Shane had to get a crown put on his tooth after he chipped it. That procedure cost us almost $1,000- for a baby tooth {yes, it was medically necessary, despite the fact that it will fall out in two years}. Aflac has a dental plan that we are considering since we don’t have any dental at all right now & since I have wisdom teeth that need to come out, we can use all the help we can get.

Aflac Real Cost Calculator

In addition to checking out the plans that Aflac offers, you can use their website to check out the Real Cost Calculator that I used to determine the cost of breaking my leg above. It covers various illnesses & injuries and helps you get an idea of what you’d pay if something were to happen.

I hope that nothing serious happens to any of you, but if it does, I really hope you have the coverage you need!

What is Lactose Intolerance? {Giveaway}

I love cereal. I eat it every morning just about & whether it’s a healthy variety or something with a cartoon on the box, they all have one thing in common: milk! As someone who is lactose intolerant, I’m ridiculously grateful for products like LACTAID, that allow me to enjoy my favorite food without the problems I get when I drink traditional milk.

lactaid milks

I was recently invited to listen in on a briefing with The Motherhood, Registered Dietician Michelle Harrington & Melissa d’Arabian, the LACTAID brand spokesperson, mom of four girls, author of the best-selling cookbook Ten Dollar Dinners, celebrity chef & television host {and all around amazing woman}. She helped break down exactly why LACTAID is so important for those of us with lactose intolerance. Here’s just a little of the extensive amount of information I learned:

What is lactose?

Lactose is the major carbohydrate in milk and other dairy foods {including ice cream}. It consists of two sugars & must be broken down into those two sugars by the intestinal enzyme lactase before it can be absorbed by the body.

What is lactose intolerance?

Most people produce lactase, the enzyme that breaks down milk, naturally. The amount of lactase that your body produces determines how much lactose your body can break down. Everyone has different levels of lactose intolerance, and many people develop it later in life {I got it somewhere around my high school years}.

What is LACTAID?

Lactaid products provide the lactase that the body can’t produce enough of, which helps the body to break down lactose. LACTAID products are 100% real dairy, they just contain a natural yeast-derived enzyme {lactase}. LACTAID makes a full line of products including milks, cottage cheese, ice cream and even eggnog! It’s the nation’s #1 lactose-free dairy brand.

Lactaid

I love LACTAID because I can have as much as I want without having a stomachache later. It gets even better: LACTAID is calcium-enriched, so it contains about 500mg of calcium in each 8 oz glass- half your day’s requirement! I also like that the lactase enzyme that they add gives it a slightly sweeter taste. This isn’t noticeable when added to a recipe {I tested that out with the Cheesy Fiesta Tacos & I couldn’t detect it at all} but makes for a great addition to cereals, in smoothies, in coffee or on its own. However you like your milk, you’ll love LACTAID!

Buy It: LACTAID is likely available at your local grocery store- you can use the store locator to find any of their products near you.

Win It: One lucky reader will win a coupon to try it out for free! Just leave a comment below telling me why you want to win. Good luck!

Preparing Kids for Activities in 4 Easy Steps

I participated in a campaign for Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Wet Ones. I received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

Since he was a baby, Shane has been involved in activities. I signed him up for Gymboree at just 10 months old, and since then he’s usually had some sort of activity. His most recent venture was soccer, which he absolutely loved, but he decided to venture into a new activity starting this week after we went to a preview class at our local Kidville. Starting this week, Shane will be taking a 16 week sports class and I’m so excited to take him to his first class!

Shane playing at Kidville

Shane pretending to look at the clouds with a Kidville instructor at our preview class

Because Shane started in activities so young, you’d think that it would be easy to get him to class without meltdowns. However, whenever he starts a new activity he does get a little bit anxious. Once he’s been to the class, he loves it & can’t wait to go back, but that first day is always a little nerve-wracking. I’ve figured out over time that it’s much easier for both of us if we’re as prepared as possible. So what does that entail?

Preparing Kids for Activities in 4 Easy Steps

Dress the Part: Shane knows it’s a soccer day when I pull out his track pants &favorite t-shirts. He also knows it’s an art day when he’s in sweats & a plain shirt that I don’t mind getting paint all over. Wearing particular outfits on class days helps him to think of the outfits as special, and makes him more excited to wear them.

Stay by their Side: Whenever possible, I think it’s a great idea to have that first class or two include parent involvement. At Gymboree, parents are always involved, but now that Shane is getting older most other places are drop-off or sit & watch. When Shane did his first “season” {9 week session} of soccer, I signed him up for the parent-involvement class first. We played together on the field for the first 9 weeks, and then I signed him up for the more advanced level where he plays with just his friends & his coach. I sit on the sidelines & wonder how he got to be so old.

For classes that only offer drop-off classes, look into taking a free preview class at the location, even if you have to preview a different {non-drop-off} class. Shane is really excited for his first Kidville class, even though it’s drop-off, because he’s been there before with me for a preview & knows how fun the place is.

Comfort in Numbers: When possible, get your child’s friends to sign up with them. When Shane was a baby, we made lots of friends at Gymboree {many of whom I am still friends with today}. Being able to tell your child that their friends will be there is comforting.

Pack the Eessentials: Be sure to carry water {especially for sports}, snacks and Wet Ones in your bag. Shane gets tired if he doesn’t eat enough before class, so sometimes he’ll have a snack in the car on the way there or right after class. &We use Wet Ones all the time- whether he touched the dirty soccer ball, got paint all over his hands or just made a mess with his snack, Shane’s almost always asking for a wipe after class.

Wet Ones help us stay prepared for anything

Being prepared for class makes it easier on both of us. &Wet Ones help us to be prepared all the time, not just during those weekly sessions. We bring them along to clean our grocery carts, clean up after a snack, and even wipe noses in a pinch. Cold & flu season is finally coming to a close, but germs are still out there & we don’t want to waste the perfect Spring weather by staying inside with a virus!

How do you stay prepared with little ones?

Making healthy choices is important to me. I am not in the best of shape, but I still make sure to take care of myself- I eat good foods, I take vitamins, and just this morning I went to the dentist for my 6-month checkup.
