Fun Outdoor Activities for Preschoolers {&Giveaway!}

Spring is here, and before it gets too hot we’ve been spending lots of time outside. Whether he hit the park or just play in our yard, we’ve been trying to get back on track with getting outside &attempting to soak up as much sunshine as possible.

We live in the middle of a city, so we don’t have a giant backyard. It’s big enough for a few trees & a deck, but we would have to remove the trees to fit a swingset, and we can’t fit any other fun stuff like a trampoline or bounce house. So we get creative & play with smaller toys. Here are some of our favorites:

Fun Outdoor Activities for Preschoolers from @NotQuiteSusie

1. Chalk. Sometimes we just draw scribbles, but usually we use the chalk to work on phonics. Shane has been learning to draw some things and even make a few letters!

2. Hopscotch. Okay, so this game uses chalk too, but it’s a whole separate activity & so much fun! While we draw the board & while he hops, Shane helps me count the squares. &It’s a good tool for fine-tuning gross motor skills too!

3. Bean bags. Shane is perfectly happy just throwing bean bags on the ground & running to pick them up, but we also play “The Color Game”. I put one different-colored bean bag on each cement square on our driveway, and then when I yell a color Shane runs to that square.

4. Throw & Catch. We have various tools to use for throwing and catching- a tennis racket & ball, two water rackets & a squishy ball, big plastic balls… if you can throw it without hurting the other person, we play with it. Shane is getting to be really good at throwing- and it lets him get all his throwing out so he doesn’t want to throw his inside toys as much.

5. Jumprope. Shane’s too short to use it by himself, but when Daddy & I each hold an end, he can actually jump over it {sometimes}! Even when he doesn’t succeed, he has fun trying- and as an added bonus, all that jumping tires him out.

Playing Hopscotch

As you can guess, Shane has a lot of energy. Some days I need some help to keep up {and some days I just want something yummy!} so I make myself a cup of coffee. People always make fun of me & joke that I really make a cup of Coffee-mate since I take my coffee white, but I can’t help it because it’s just so good.

Coffee-mate Coupons

Before your little one drags you out the door, complete your morning with Nestlé! If you like your cup of coffee as much as I do, be sure to download the $2 off Nescafé and $1 off Coffee-Mate coupons so you can have enough energy to get back on track spending time outside! Teaching Kids About Money

It’s never too early to teach children about money. Shane likes to get new games for the iPad allthetime, which was getting expensive. We knew we had to find a way to show Shane that we simply couldn’t get him 10 new $6.99 apps every single week. He’s only three, but we already have a small system in place that is exposing him to it a little, and while I wouldn’t exactly trust him with my credit card, I think we are setting him up to understand it more easily when he’s older.

Teaching Kids About Money- An Easy Idea for Beginning Learners

What we do: Each week, Shane is given three “Shane Dollars” {printed pieces of paper that have “Shane Dollar” written on them- our system is super intricate} on Monday. Each Shane dollar is good for one app from the app store for the iPad.

How it Helps:

Budgeting: Shane knows that having three “Shane Dollars” means he can get three games, so instead of asking for games he doesn’t really want, he takes his time to look at screen shots for games & asks us if they’d be good ones for him to pick. For now, all apps, regardless of price, are worth 1 “Shane Dollar”, though soon we plan on making paid apps worth 2 so that he can get deeper into budgeting, when he has to decide if that paid app is really worth 2 “Shane Dollars” when it means he gets one less game.

Patience: If you work a typical job, you get a paycheck every two weeks, or weekly. You likely don’t get paid every day. So having Shane get his “Shane Dollars” on Mondays causes him to need to be patient- even if he blows through all of his Dollars on the same day, he has to wait until Monday.

The Value of Hard Work: On occasion, Shane will find a game that he has to have RIGHTNOW but he’s out of “Shane Dollars”. Usually, we still have him wait until Monday, but once in awhile he’ll have the opportunity to earn additional money. He gladly takes up the easy tasks we give him, like moving the recycling into the proper container or helping me sort laundry, in exchange for a bonus “Shane Dollar”.

While our system is not even close to the only one, it’s what works for us right now. We use this very basic system because Shane is only three years old, but as he grows, so will our system. Eventually we will switch to real money & he will have to save up to purchase items, and he will  have a set list of chores to do each week before he can receive his allowance. &While Shane uses his “Dollars” to buy iPad apps, you could easily apply this to whatever your child can’t get enough of! Teaching kids to budget when they’re young gives them an advantage for later as it isn’t always easy to figure out exactly how much you need to budget each month.

Genworth Financial knows how hard it can be to budget & they now have an Easy Budget Calculator that can help you plan for retirement. By entering the amounts of your bills & income, you can determine what you can really afford vs. what you want. Looking at the sheet makes me realize how little of the answers I have for myself, though Justin does most of our finances so that’s a big part of the reason. {It also explains why as women get older, they become more financially educated- something that this article that I recently read from Yahoo! can explain much better than I can.}

How do you teach your children to budget?

Disney Minnie Mouse Bow-tique Super Surprise Party for LeapPad & Leapster Explorer {Review & Giveaway!}

Shane is a huge Disney Jr. fan, and one of his absolute favorite shows is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. He loves all of the characters & likes to act out episodes with the “guys” {little figures} he inherited from when I was a kid. He has a few Mickey & Minnie games for the iPad and loves them, so when I had the chance to review the new Minnie Mouse Bow-tique Super Surprise Party game for his LeapPad!

minnie's bow-tique

In the Minnie’s Bow-tique game, Daisy and the rest of Minnie’s friends are about to throw a surprise party for Minnie! They don’t want her to know though and they try to keep her busy by having her make them bows all day. There are three mini-games to prepare for the party: Ribbon Roundup, Butterfly Bows, and Daisy’s Dressing Room. You can also design bows in the Bow Design Studio and play Hide & Seek with Cuckoo Loca!

MinnieMouse_Bowtique_6_SC

Like all LeapFrog games, this game automatically adjusts to your child’s skill level. For example, in the Ribbon Round-Up game, in the lower levels you are asked to tap on ribbons with the same color and pattern. When your child becomes very skilled at this, the game will adjust itself to go up to the next level, where your child will have to tap on ribbons with the same uppercase letter, and the same lowercase letter.

While the game is very educational, it also allows your child to just have fun, too! Shane absolutely loves the bow design studio, where he can pick some ribbon and decorate the bow however he wants. The first time he did this part, he struggled with using the stylus to tie the ribbon into a bow. He practiced just a couple of times & now he’s really good at it- and super, super proud of himself for mastering it {I’m proud, too!}.

MinnieMouse_Bowtique_1_SC

The only thing Shane didn’t like about this game? It only let him put like fifteen sparkles onto the bows when he wanted to cover every single inch. Apparently he likes glitter almost as much as his Mommy.

Buy It: You can find Minnie’s Bow-tique Super Surprise Party wherever LeapFrog games are sold or online at LeapFrog.com. You can also purchase it as a downloadable app.

Win It: One lucky reader will win their own cartridge! Just enter using the simple form below. Good luck!

How to Get Kids Excited About Flash Cards: Hot Dots Jr.!

I believe in flash cards. When I was a kid, I learned my times tables using them, and when I got older & went to high school I created my own to study. So I may or may not have purchased color flash cards for Shane when he was like, a year old.

The thing is- and I learned this very, very quickly- three year olds aren’t really into flash cards. They start out super excited about them, but then after five or so cards they get bored & move on to the next thing. I truly believe in the value of them, but they only work if you actually use them. So how do you get your kids to use {and maybe even love} them? With Hot Dots Jr.!

hot dots jr pen and cards

Hot Dots Jr. is basically a flash card game. There are packs of cards with different themes and each card has an easy to understand question and three answers underneath. The child determines their answer & then uses the Pen- either Ace or Kat {a dog & cat, respectively} to select what they believe is the correct answer. If they get it wrong, the pen’s eyes turn red & a buzzer sounds, along with a phrase like “Try again!”. If they get it right, though, the eyes turn green and they are awarded with praise!

Shane loves Hot Dots Jr. so much that within a week of receiving Ace & 1 set of cards to review, we had already purchased two more sets! {We now have Beginning Phonics, Numbers & Counting and The Alphabet.} He gets so excited when he gets an answer right & it makes him want to do more cards!

Green eyes- he got it right!

You may have to participate in this activity with your child depending on their age because some reading is involved. You’ll have to tell your child what the question is for the card- for example, the phonics set has both the questions “What has the same beginning sound?” and “What has the same end sound?”, so if your child can’t read yet they won’t know what question they need to answer. However, I love doing things like this with Shane anyway so the participation is actually a benefit to me! And, some of the other sets don’t really require any reading, like the numbers one that shows a picture and you select how many of the item are in the picture. Either way, anything that gets Shane excited about doing flash cards is perfection in my book!

This activity is great for a large age range and is geared toward kids 3-7. But older kids can have fun too- in fact, they have another whole line just called “Hot Dots” for older kids ages 7 & up.

Buy It: You can find Hot Dots Jr. Card Sets & Ace and Kat pens on the Educational Insights website. Card sets are $14.99 each & pens are $12.99 each.

Win It: One lucky reader will win their own pen & card set! Just enter using the simple form below. Good luck!

It’s Never Too Late to Finish School with Ivy Bridge College! {& $1,000 Tuition Giveaway}

When I found out that I was pregnant with Shane, I was in college. My world revolved around work, class, and sorority events, and of course my fiancee. I was frequently having 18 hour days- starting out with 8 hour shifts at work, then 6 hours of class, then a sorority event to attend in the evenings & an hour drive home every night.

{I was four months pregnant in this picture, hence the look of complete & utter exhaustion}

When I found out I was pregnant, it was January, and by the end of that semester I was miserable. I was waddling around in the heat {it was over 100 degrees daily by the end of the semester} and I was 7 months pregnant trying to navigate a huge campus with bad parking options. Every day, I wished that I had taken online classes. They would have helped me so much during that time.

Once Shane came around, I did start taking online classes. I wanted to stay home with him, so I enrolled in online courses through my university & kept going for another year that way. Unfortunately, at that point there were some issues with my financial aid and it was pulled completely. I couldn’t afford to continue school, and had to withdraw for the time being.

While I wish I would have been able to finish school, I know it’s never too late. I don’t intend on having an actual career for quite some time- at least until Shane is in high school if not later- so I have no immediate need for a college degree. &I’ve seen people go back to school later in life- in fact, my mom is a student right now! She just finished up a couple of years at the community college & starts at the same university I was attending this Spring. I’m so proud of her, and she is the perfect example of why it’s never too late to get your degree.

Like I said, I’m in no rush, but at the same time I actually like school. I have been wanting to take a course at a time, that way it’s not overwhelming with everything else going on, and that way I can start chipping away at the remaining 20-something credits I have left to graduate. That’s why I’m going to be taking a class at Ivy Bridge College next semester! {I thought about enrolling this time, but with the wedding, I figured I’d better wait.}

ivy bridge college

Ivy Bridge College {IBC} is a great option for Moms who want to go back to school. In fact, 50% of their students are mothers! IBC is flexible so you can keep your current job or keep staying at home with your kids, but you can still continue your education at your own pace. &They offer support services including a free online private community dedicated to students who are Moms where they can support each other. I think that’s such a brilliant tool & that every school should have that!

They also offer weekly success coaching including career planning, resume writing & interviewing skills, free tutoring, personalized academic advising & the ability to earn a college degree in as little as 17 months. They are designed for you to earn your associate’s degree there and then transfer to over 150 partner schools. They make transferring easy with their clear transfer agreements & make sure that you don’t waste time on courses that won’t transfer.

So what does it cost? About 1/3 of what it costs to attend other private schools. &Once you have your degree, you’ll see return on your investment- those with an associate’s degree earn 20% more & those with a bachelor’s earn 65% more than those with just a high school diploma.

Want even more reason to check out Ivy Bridge? What about a $1,000 tuition discount?
