Guest Post: 5 Chic Cars for the Modern Mother

Mothers have a lot to think about when it comes to car buying. You’re probably after space and reliability, but that doesn’t mean you have to lose out on style points. This guide to 5 of the best modern cars on the market comes from the guys at PassSmart, and is sure to help any modern mom looking for a car to suit her chic streak.

2013 honda accord

Honda Accord

The all new Honda Accord sedan has a roomy interior and buckets of style. The Honda Accord has, for a long while, been a staple on US roads, and whilst it’s known for its practicality and reliability, it hasn’t stood out from the crowd. The new Honda design aims to change that, and with its remodeled interior and sleeker exterior, it’s certainly more eye catching.

The all new Honda Accord has a suggested starting price of $21,680 and there’s even the option to ‘build your own sedan’. This involves choosing your color, accessories and specific model. Watch out though, the more you accessorize, the more you’ll spend!

2013 ford flex

Ford Flex

The 2013 Ford Flex offers everything a mom needs in terms of space and reliability, plus it oozes with style. It’s ideal for the school run, a trip to the store and going out for dinner in! This all new and unique design will definitely stand out on the road, and with Ford behind it, you know it’s built to last. The Ford Flex also comes with the option of an EcoBoost engine; perfect for the eco-conscious moms.

The Ford Flex starts at $30,900 for the most basic model.

2013 Toyota Prius

Toyota Prius Hybrid

Although it’s not the most unique or exciting car on the road, it’s perfect for the eco-warrior mom. The plug-in hybrid car has been revamped for 2013, and the new model comes with the option of a number of safety features, including lane keep assist, dynamic car cruise control and Safety Connect.

The all new Prius ranked 6th in affordable midsize cars, and has a standard price of $24,200.

2013 volkswagon jetta

Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid

The Jetta looks great and now you can get it in an eco-friendly version. The Jetta has the reliable and sturdy build we’ve come to expect from Volkswagen, and it’s deceptively roomy. The 2013 hybrid version costs around $8,000 more than the standard, fuel version, but you do get more miles for your money. On top of that, you can feel good about your carbon footprint!

The 2013 VW Jetta Hybrid starts at $24,995, whilst the gas version starts from $16,720.

2013 audi allroad

Audi Allroad

This Audi with an edgy side offers space, comfort and style. The Allroad is not so big that you can’t fit into parking spaces at the store, but is big enough to fit the kids and their baggage in the back. The Allroad doesn’t come cheap, but it can tackle all sorts of terrain; helpful if you have a particularly grueling school run!

Prices for the Audi Allroad start at £39,600, so it’s quite a hefty investment!

Kia Sorento SX Review

I’ve had a lot of cars in my life. I have had an Oldsmobile, a Crysler, two Chevys, a Nissan & a Hyundai. {&I’ve only had my license for a combined total of 6 years. Go figure.} &That’s not to mention Justin’s Chevy, two Mazda’s or his current Volkswagen. But thanks to the recent opportunity I had to test drive the Kia Sorento SX, it’s been confirmed that the next car we buy will be a Kia!

A few months ago, we test drove the 2012 Kia Optima Hybrid for a week. We took it on a weekend road trip to San Diego {which is when Justin proposed, actually} & then drove it around town for a few days after that- and I have to say that I fell completely in love. The one thing about it was that I had told myself I was done with sedans after my current car & I really wanted an SUV.

kia sorento

Enter the Kia Sorento SX! As far as I’m concerned, it’s almost the exact same as the Optima Hybrid, but bigger! Okay, so it’s not a hybrid, but the driver’s seat has a cooling system- and living in Vegas, that’s a fair trade to me.

kia sorento power mirrors

The Sorento has other great features, too, like the power folding mirrors that you can fold with the touch of a button- perfect for parking in tight spaces {my current car may have a ding on the passenger mirror from hitting the side of the garage}.

kia sorento third row seating

The SUV has third-row seating that can easily be folded down to turn into additional trunk space. Since we just have a family of three, we definitely don’t need that third row, which is good because when the seats are up the trunk space is pretty small. It’s enough to get by, and the third row seating makes this car great for large families, but we would rather have the extra trunk space since we still travel with a stroller. But I appreciate that it’s an option! You can also fold down just one seat, which I think is a pretty great option too.

kia sorento interior

Now here’s where I once again make my disclaimer about how girly I am when it comes to cars: I love cars. I do. But I don’t care about V6 engines or torque. In fact, I have no idea what torque is. But cars are a huge part of our everyday life so I definitely care about some aspects- like the inside. {After all, it’s what’s on the inside that counts, right?} Kia never fails to impress me with their interiors- from the high quality materials used to make their seats to the beautiful dashboards with enough settings to make you think you’re in a spaceship, I have fallen head over heels with Kias for their interiors alone.

I already mentioned that the driver’s side seat has a cooling system- but it bares repeating. I am a huge fan of heated seats {which this vehicle has on both front seats} and while my current car doesn’t have that option, I do use it in Justin’s car during the winter. But I live in Vegas, and it is HOT in the summer. I literally have to turn my car on, crank up the A/C & wait five minutes to get in because the seat is so hot & the steering wheel is too hot to touch without literally burning my hand. So to have a seat cooling option just makes me want to go out & buy the Sorento today.

kia sorento driver side

That’s not the only convenience added for drivers, either. This car has all the good stuff, like Bluetooth compatibility {and a cord to hardwire your phone to the dash} with steering wheel controls, a great navigation system & a whole lot more bells &whistles. &It has keyless entry, which I’m super obsessed with since I can never find my keys in my purse.

shane driving kia sorento

Even Shane loves this vehicle- when we had it at our house, he asked to go out & sit in it to “pretend drive” every day! I’m not sure if our next car will be an Optima Hybrid or a Sorento, but either way it’s definitely going to be a Kia!

What is your must-have feature for any car or SUV?

I was provided a vehicle to drive for a week to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own. Also, please excuse the stock images- my camera decided to hate me.

2012 Kia Optima Hybrid Review

A couple of weekends ago, we took a trip to San Diego. It’s about a five hour drive, so we figured that we’d take Justin’s car since it takes diesel & gets crazy good gas mileage- much better than my car, at least! The problem is, his car is pretty small. I wasn’t sure that we’d all sit comfortably in there for that long of a drive- Shane’s feet are squished against Justin’s seat & the glovebox hangs low, making me uncomfortable if I sit there for more than twenty minutes. The point is- it’s not a road trip car.

So when I had the chance to take the Kia Optima Hybrid on our trip instead- I jumped at the chance. It was the perfect mix of my car & Justin’s- it has ample room inside like my car, but it gets amazing gas mileage like Justin’s! Plus, Justin has been eyeing this car for awhile now & has even said that if he was looking to buy a new car right now, he’d want this one. And that was before he even knew we’d be reviewing one!

Kia Optima Hybrid

The first thing I noticed about the car was that it looked like a sports car! From the lights to the rims, this car doesn’t look like your typical four-door sedan. We were both very impressed by the looks of it, but of course, you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. Luckily, the inside is great, too!

UVO by Microsoft

The radio was perfect for our travel since it had Sirius Satellite Radio so we didn’t find ourselves attempting to try to find the local stations when we crossed state lines like we usually have to. You can also plug in your phone and play the music from it using the UVO by Microsoft system, but we were having issues getting Justin’s phone to connect. The issue was on Justin’s phone, though- not the car. We eventually got his podcast player working for the trip back & Justin was able to listen to his podcasts while Shane & I slept, which was very nice for him.

Kia Steering Wheel Controls
Another great feature that I loved was the abundance of steering wheel controls. Nevada is a hands-free state, which means you can get a ticket for talking on your cell phone without using a Bluetooth device. I love that many new cars allow you to talk on your phone through your car’s speaker system- it is great for anyone but especially those like me who forget to charge their Bluetooth device & then just can’t make calls until they’re parked. Not only does this car have the phone-to-car technology, but for added safety your hands don’t even need to leave the steering wheel! You can start or end a call directly from the controls on the wheel- and you can even use your voice to dial! The car also had lots of other buttons- some change the display {which can show eco info, mileage, miles until gas is needed, etc.}, some are for the volume and then of course there’s cruise control- another favorite for traveling long distances on the freeway!

Kia Trunk Opener

This feature has nothing to do with traveling, but is great for the summertime for anyone- but particularly those of us who live in 110+ degree heat. There have been many times this summer where I had to put my groceries in the front of the car, simply because I literally couldn’t open my trunk without burning my hand. This car has a little button underneath the hood that opens the truck, and you can keep your hand on it to open the trunk without getting burned since it’s rubbery & doesn’t get hot. I really wish my car had this- it’s such a simple feature but would make such a difference in this heat.

Rearview Mirror

I know this is standard for many cars, but neither of our cars have this fun feature- you can program your mirror to open your garage or community gates! Our community doesn’t have a gate, so we only have clickers for our garage, but we also have clickers for Justin’s parent’s community. It becomes a LOT of clutter if you keep them all out- especially for those who actually live in communities with gates who need to keep both their gate clicker & garage clicker out. So it’s nice being able to just program the mirror to do it clutter-free! I like that it shows the direction, too- I am horrible at cardinal directions & as far as I’m concerned, North is just “up”- so it’s nice to have that as backup in case my directions say to go North.

Kia Optima Hybrid Interior

The interior was really nice, too- the one we reviewed had cloth seats, which I personally prefer since we have a 3 year old who can give seats quite a beating {not to mention, we tend to need to clean them a lot!}. I also like it for where I live because again, it’s hot here & leather can be brutal in the summer. There was also a lot of room, and all of us were comfortable for our long trip!

I was incredibly impressed with the gas mileage: we made it from our home in Las Vegas all the way to Legoland in Carlsbad, CA, then to our hotel in San Diego, then to the beach in Coronado then back to San Diego for the zoo & still had some gas left! We filled up for our drive back and had just under half a tank left from the entire drive from San Diego back to Vegas- about 340 miles {all highway}.

The only thing that I didn’t like about this car was the trunk space. Because it’s a hybrid, it of course has a battery- and in this car, the battery is stored in the trunk. There’s still enough room in the trunk for a grocery trip- and we fit our large duffel bag and stroller in it for our trip just fine. But if you use a double stroller or needed a larger suitcase, I’m not sure they’d fit.

Kia from behind

You can check out the 2012 Kia Optima Hybrid, which starts at $25,700, at your local dealer!

What car did you take on your last road trip? Did you like it?

100 Cars for Good: There’s Still Time to Vote!

A few months ago, I told you about Toyota’s philanthropy event 100 Cars for Good. To sum it up, every day for 100 days, 5 nonprofits are available to vote for on Facebook, and the nonprofit with the most votes at the end of the day wins a new Toyota! {Don’t worry about the other four- while it’s not the same as a car, they do all receive a $1,000 cash grant from Toyota.}

Day 79See those images on the left? Those represent the focus of each nonprofit {animals, elderly, education, etc.} so that you can choose what you care about most.

Each afternoon, the previous day’s winner is announced & the new five finalists are revealed. Facebook users can then vote for the cause that they want to win- and each one has a video you can watch to help you decide who you think deserves a Toyota!

The voting process is simple:

-Log on to Facebook
-Visit Toyota USA on Facebook
-Click the “Cars for Good” tab
-Click on any of the organizations shown to learn more & vote!

It’s really that easy, and your vote can make all the difference for a nonprofit that you care about! Today is Day 79 so there are only 21 more days- so make sure you’re voting every day & helping Toyota make a difference!

100 cars for good

So head over to Toyota’s Facebook page to vote for your favorite organization of the day!

What cause hits closest to your heart? I’m a sucker for animals.

2012 Toyota Prius c Review

If you’re following me on Instagram {@NotQuiteSusie!} or saw my Wordless Wednesday post last week, then you know that last weekend I was cruising around in style in the Habanero {i.e. bright orange} Prius c! It’s an amazing car & while I only had a few days in it {I had it for four days but was sick for two of them} I was very impressed by it!

2012 prius c

{Disclaimer: I love cars, but am no car buff. I don’t know about things like torque, or carborators, but I am sharing below about the stuff I do know about! For more tech/spec details on the 2012 Toyota Prius c, feel free to check out Toyota’s website!}

Whenever I find a car I like, the first thing I ask or try to find out is what colors I can get it in. The Prius c comes in nine colors, including the bright orange that I drove, the beautiful Summer Rain Metallic, and more standard colors like Super White, Black Sand Pearl, and Absolutely Red.

prius c colors

Aside from color, the most important thing about a car to me is what’s on the inside. Since I obviously spend most of the time that I use a car sitting inside of it, I want to make sure that it’s visually appealing, and having a few extra features doesn’t hurt! The Prius c interior doesn’t disappoint, with dark & light grey seats & dash and a nice big touch screen in the center that has does a few tricks.

prius c interior

The Prius c is one of the many Toyotas that now features their Entune technology, which is the system that allows your car to connect to some of your favorite apps, such as Pandora, Bing, and more. You can also use it to check on traffic, find the cheapest fuel around, or even check the stocks or weather report. Whatever you need on the road, it’s just a click away! Entune is included standard or as an option on many Toyota vehicles & will continue to be included in new vehicles as they come out.

prius c mpg

Some other fun features include the ability to Bluetooth stream your music from your phone, make calls by voice, and the ability to see where your energy is coming from {battery or engine} while you’re driving! You can even check your ECO score to see if you could change something about your driving to be more efficient, and you can see how many miles you’re averaging per gallon, in real-time. Oh, and if the multitude of music apps aren’t enough, it comes Sirius satellite radio equipped as well.

prius hybrid

&Of course, it’s part of the Prius family, so it’s a hybrid- which means it’s better for the environment & gets great gas mileage! The “c” in Prius c stands for “city”, so this particular vehicle is optimized for city traffic. It gets an average of 53 city/46 highway/50 combined MPG- MUCH better than the 21mpg I get in my current vehicle if I’m lucky.

Prius c back

The Prius c is fun to drive- it has a lot of “get up & go”. It took some getting used to the first time I drove it since I’m used to a car where I practically have to slam the gas pedal down to get it to go, but once I was used to it, it was quite nice. It was “zippy”, as Justin called it, and it’s small so it’s very easy to maneuver!

Prius c interior backseat

The downside to it being so small is that it can be a hassle if you have kids. Justin has installed our car seat into 7 different cars so far & he said that this car was by far the most difficult to install it in, due to a combination of lack of space & the way that the upper LATCH was angled. After taking the headrest off, he finally installed it, but it wasn’t easy. &While Shane had enough room for his legs when I was driving {since I’m short & move the seat way up}, it wouldn’t have been comfortable if Justin was driving & had the seat back. You can have this car with kids, but if you have more than one car seat I’d strongly suggest looking into the Prius v instead {which gets less mpg but has more space for cargo}.

The Prius c starts at just $18,950 and is available at your local dealership now!
