This Friday, Disney Channel is releasing it’s 100th DCOM- Adventures in Babysitting! Starring Sabrina Carpenter and Sofia Carson, this movie is a remake of the classic 80’s film by the same name.
About the Movie:
Fan-favorites Sabrina Carpenter (“Girl Meets World”) and Sofia Carson (“Descendants 2”) join forces in the upcoming Disney Channel Original Movie “Adventures in Babysitting,” a contemporary re-imagined tale of the hugely popular 1980s blockbuster with the same name. Set to premiere this summer, this live-action adventure comedy pays homage to the 1980s classic with familiar references and nostalgic scenes in a comedic, heartfelt story that celebrates individuality, friendship and self-empowerment.
“Adventures in Babysitting” brings together two unlikely friends when a tedious evening for contentious babysitters, Jenny Parker (Sabrina Carpenter) and Lola Perez (Sofia Carson), turns into an exciting journey in the big city as they hunt for one of the kids who somehow snuck away. The story unfolds when Jenny and Lola, two girls with distinctly different personalities, both interview for a coveted internship opportunity and accidently swap phones. In need of extra cash, audacious Lola nominates herself when the Andersons call Jenny looking for a last-minute babysitter. Meanwhile, dependable Jenny is already set to babysit the Cooper family for the evening. Lola’s first attempt at babysitting takes an unforeseen turn after Jenny discovers what Lola has done, and Jenny takes the kids to the Andersons to help rectify the situation. However, this leads all of them on an unexpected and exciting adventure of a lifetime.
Back in April I had the chance to screen the movie ahead of Friday’s release and it was hysterical! The original movie was funny, but not something I’d let my kids watch- so the new version is absolutely perfect. It includes the funniest moments from the original- like the factory scene and having to perform to get off of a stage- but in a much more kid-friendly way. The little kids in this one were awesome, too- Katy was the ultimate girly girl and Emily was well-done as a young girl trying to figure out who she is. All of the kids were fun in their own way and it was nice seeing all different personalities showcased!
Speaking of, Lola and Jenny were the ultimate babysitters. Lola was a bit of a hot mess, but super creative and very dedicated to her art. Jenny was the complete Type-A control freak, but of course they both realized over the course of the movie that maybe they could each stand to be a little more like each other. That is, of course, after they got into a bunch of crazy situations first!
This movie is even better than the original because it has double the babysitters and double the laughs. I know that Shane is going to go crazy for this movie and I can’t wait to watch it again- this time with my whole family!
After we watched the movie, we had the chance to interview the stars- Sofia Carson and Sabrina Carpenter! They were both very sweet {and very funny!} girls. They dished on everything from their experiences with babysitting to what it was like remaking a classic:
On the kids they were “babysitting”:
Sabrina: The five kids are, are some of the most talented we’ve ever met. They were so professional, and they were such a joy to work with. I wish I could babysit them.
Sofia: They became our family. We all became like a family and we had little parties every weekend, all of us. We were singing and dancing and karaoke and improv games- we had the greatest time.
On the funniest thing about each other:
Sabrina: That she’s not that funny.
Sofia: That’s what I was gonna say! I’m not funny.
Sabrina: No, but that’s what makes her funny is that she knows that she’s not funny. But with a script, she’s so funny. If she had writers for her all the time, she’d be so funny.
Sofia: I’d be hysterical! Good thing I’m an actress. And Sabrina’s probably the funniest person you will ever meet. She doesn’t need a script.
On getting the part:
Sabrina: We auditioned with each other immediately, and we were the first to- if I’m correct- read for the roles, and it worked. We’re very lucky that it worked out perfectly.
On trying to recreate the magic of the first movie:
Sabrina: I did see the movie, I was a big fan and my mom was a big fan of the movie. So to be able to create a new version of such a classic, beloved tale for this new generation was something I was honored to do, and it was an incredible experience. Apparently I have a thing with sequels and remakes.
On doing their own stunts:
Sofia: I got to do all the stunts which was cool. You guys can’t tell because of my incredible makeup artist, but I have a big scar on my knee.
Sabrina: It was an outtake, where she’s running to her car in the beginning with her art where she jumps over the bushes. She fell and no one saw her.
Sofia: Can I also mention it was the lamest stunt of the whole movie? We ran in the rain the whole movie. I was at the factory hanging from like 20 feet up in the air. I did all of that. When they asked me to run and walk, I fell.
It’s the beginning of the movie when Lola is first introduced and Lola’s running out of the house with her painting because she’s obviously running late. They had just wet the pavements to make it look nice on camera and I wasn’t wearing shoes that had any rubber soles. And I had to run down the hill pretty quickly and jump over a lawn. The second I hit the pavement, I just wiped out. All you could hear was a thump. And you just see me disappear behind the car. But now I get to say that I fell doing a stunt.
On their experiences with babysitting:
Sofia: I babysat my little cousins, but they were such good kids. They’re angels. I have no funny stories! We got ice cream. I got chocolate. They got strawberry and they went to sleep. It was very easy- nothing like what we experienced in this movie- there were no ferrets involved whatsoever.
Sabrina: I’ve never babysat, but once I locked a babysitter out of the house because I didn’t really like her. Well, it was me and my two older sisters… she wasn’t a great babysitter, though- I will say that, because she brought over her boyfriend. We were like, we don’t know this person. He was really, really nice, but still. We just played piano inside for a couple hours.
So are you more of a Lola or a Jenny?
Sofia: I would say I’m kind of an in-between. Lola is this really cool, brave, free spirited young girl who isn’t afraid to just live life, despite the consequences of sometimes making irresponsible decisions. But she’s really passionate about her art and a very strong girl. I’m also very passionate- I think we both are- about what we do about our music and acting, and we’re both also independent girls. We both have really strong, incredible moms, and they taught us to be strong girls, or represent girl power. Lola and Jenny are both like that. Jenny, even though she’s a little bit more inside the box, she’s still a strong, powerful young girl. We both save the day together.
On what it’s like being in the spotlight:
Sofia Carson: It is an honor to be able to be in a position where we can influence young girls. And it’s a big responsibility, but it’s a beautiful responsibility because as we were growing up, we looked up to actors and singers to be our role models as well. Their voice and what they stand for always influenced us so much. I think we’re very lucky that we’re able to tell stories, like Lola and Jenny’s story, who represent girl power, because girls can take over the world. I think it’s an honor to be able to be able to share these stories with them.
Sabrina Carpenter: I think Sofia and I both had such big dreams and aspirations as to what we wanted to do. And I think the fact that we’ve been able to figure out those dreams and not only get to do them every day but love what we do every day is hopefully an inspiration to girls everywhere- and boys- to figure out what they want to do. And make sure that whatever they do in life, that they love it, so that way they don’t have to work a day in their life.
Be sure to tune in tomorrow night, Friday June 24th, to catch the newest Disney Channel Original Movie, Adventures in Babysitting!
