I have written before about how important I feel it is to get kids thinking about where their food comes from & why they need to eat healthy foods. It’s one of the things I focus on with Shane a lot because I want him to grow up knowing how to make smart choices. He’s also a very picky eater, but I know that when he is involved in making his food, whether that be by helping me cook or bake or by growing the ingredients that go inside, he’s more likely to eat it.
When I learned about the Back to the Roots Mushroom Growing Kit, I immediately thought it was brilliant. I didn’t eat a mushroom until I moved out at 20 {my dad has a thing about them & wouldn’t allow them in our house- yes, I’m being serious} but since then I’ve realized how great they are. Not only are they yummy, but they have a lot of health benefits as well! So the chance to grow my own, especially with Shane’s help, sounded great.
Now, I am not known for my green thumb & although we tried, our mushrooms did not grow. That said, I firmly believe that the problem was me & not the kit- though the directions are simple, I don’t think that I cut the slits in the plastic big enough & I don’t think the mushrooms got enough water during their initial soaking or when I had Shane spray them twice daily because of this.
If you do the kit right, you can grow up to 1 1/2 lbs. of mushrooms per kit- and you can harvest your first kit in as little as ten days! Two crops are guaranteed from the kit, and many customers even get three or more uses out of it. Even better- the soil is 100% recycled coffee grounds from Peet’s Coffee- so the soil is safe & sustainable. &The company gives back, too- if you post a picture of your fully grown kit, they’ll donate a kit and a sustainability curriculum to an elementary school classroom of your choice!
Buy It: You can buy your own kit for $19.95 from their website- order 2 & you’ll get free shipping! You can also find the kits at various grocery stores- check the store locator for where to buy.
Note: I received a kit for including this feature. All opinions are my own.
