Halloween Fright

Today is October 1st, which means it’s time to take down my summer décor & put up all of my pumpkins, ghosts, and black cats! I’m actually a little nervous about it, though.

This year, Shane has been super scared of Halloween, so I’ve been trying to think of ways to help him realize that all of the scary stuff is just pretend. We already have a Super Why book all about a ghost that was afraid of Halloween that shows how everything is just make believe, and we’ve been reading it at least a few times a month since last Halloween just because he loves it. Still, he’s not so sure.

In fact, last week I asked him if he wanted to go for a walk around the block and of course, he said yes. We got a couple of houses away from the end of the street, and I casually brought up that it would be Halloween soon and asked if he was excited {this was before I knew he was afraid}. Instead of saying yes, he tensed up and stopped walking. He turned to me, eyes wide, and said, “I want to go home.” When I asked him why, he said, “I don’t want to go to Halloween.” The poor kid hasn’t wanted to go on a walk since as he’s afraid that Halloween is a place rather than a time & that it lurks on our street.

But then the other day, the neighbors decorated their house. They put up orange lights, and spider webs, and all of the fun decorations that I’m yearning to put up. We drove past &Shane pointed it out, once again saying that he didn’t want to go to Halloween. But then, I had an idea. I asked him if he would help me {he’s a big fan of “helping” right now} make our house look like that, too. &Luckily, he agreed!

So the other day I bought new photo frames with Halloween icons, some mini pumpkins and a few other decorations and this week, we’ll be bringing in the big tub of decorations from the garage. Hopefully it at least helps with his fear of Halloween, but if not, at least my house will look cute!

Was your kid afraid of Halloween? How did you help them realize there was nothing to be afraid of?

  1. Last year was my daughter’s first Halloween. Being that young she really didn’t notice things. I see a lot of potential for her to get the frights in the coming years. She loves Super Why. Maybe I need to get her that book. Good luck with your little one.
