Sometimes it can be really hard to decide what to get a child for their birthday. If you know the child well, he or she will often give you suggestions as to what to get. Otherwise, you’re usually on your own.

Here are some great gift ideas that a child will love:

1. Beads

Beads always make a great gift, particularly for girls aged six through twelve. They can create their own jewellery or give bracelets and necklaces to friends. You can buy little packages of beads and get several shapes, sizes, and colours, or buy a set that has a plentiful variety.

2. Bakery

For a little baker, give them a roll of cookie dough from the grocery store (or make it yourself), a baking sheet, a rolling pin, and some cookie cutters. Include the baking time and recipe if you made the dough yourself; this way, the child can make more dough at a later date if he or she wants. Just make sure that you or another adult are the one cooking.

3. Gift Baskets

Gift baskets or buckets are always a great gift idea. Get a pail or inexpensive basket and fill it with fun outdoor toys and small indoor items: chalk, a skipping rope, a yo-yo, a water pistol, a deck of cards, jacks, marbles, silly putty, toy cars or trains, and some crayons and a colouring book. The possibilities are endless.

4. For the Outdoors

A couple of small pots, potting soil mix, and some seeds will turn any nature-loving child into a green thumb. You can select some flowers or herbs depending on the interests of the child.

5. Movies

Movies are always a hit, especially if the child loves sleepovers. The titles you choose should be age-appropriate, of course. If you’re not the parent, ask if there are any particular titles to avoid or include. Classics are always great. For younger children, movies with talking animals are always popular.

6. Camera

A camera (disposable, digital, or instant) makes for a great gift for a child interested in photography. You could also include a book on how to take or develop photos for a kid who’s serious about learning the skill.

Choosing the best birthday gift for a child isn’t always easy, but all it takes is a little inspiration and thought to buy a gift any child will love.
