Back to School Tools: Lakeshore Learning Giveaway!

As I mentioned yesterday, this year I’ll be doing a lot of play-based learning with Shane. I recently had the chance to use a couple of really great educational toys from Lakeshore Learning with Shane & they were a huge hit!

monkey counting

Shane is obsessed with monkeys, so when I saw these Linking Number Monkeys I had to get them. I worried that Shane would play with them once & get bored since they don’t “do” much, but since I’m really trying to focus on teaching him 11-20 I decided to get them anyway. We’re still working on using them for number recognition {he has issues with double-digit numbers because he thinks 11 is “two ones” instead of “eleven” and 12 is “one and two”, etc.”} but we’re getting there, but we’ve found a variety of other uses for them as well!

They are great for sorting- we sort by color and by number {if it has a 2 in front, a 1 in front, or just one number}! They’re also great for fine motor skills as he links their hands together.

&They’re perfect for using his imagination! He frequently uses them to act out scenes and just play- they’re a favorite since they’re monkeys and because they are the perfect size for his hands and many of his playsets! I even keep finding them napping in his bed as he loves putting them “night-night” {all thirty of them}.

Learning Kit Items

I’m also trying to do some science type stuff with him to give him a head start on it since I was never good at it so we also tried out the Can Do! Color and Light Discovery Kit. I was very impressed with this one because the contents are so simple- 2 {unbreakable} mirrors, 4 color paddles, a flashlight & a little red bear- but there were so many fun things to do with the kit! It comes with 6 activity suggestion cards {which are pictures, so no reading is required} and there is plenty more to do beyond the suggestions as well. I also loved that you can store all of the pieces in the canister it comes in for easy clean up & storage!

Color tiles play

I loved this kit because while there were ways that I could set it up for him to learn from it, I could also just give him the items in the kit & let him explore them however he wanted. He liked viewing the room through the different color paddles {sometimes while making silly faces}, and he realized on his own that he could make other colors by combining two of them.

While I discovered Lakeshore Learning online, they actually have retail locations nationwide! I even found out that I have one not too far from me and I can’t wait to go check it out in person! {Even though I know I’m going to spend way too much money there.} They do free crafts for kids on Saturdays from 11am-3pm and offer in-store discounts, so it’s definitely worth checking out if you have one nearby. {You can use their store locator to find a retail store near you.}

Buy It: You can find the Linking Number Monkeys {$29.95} and the Can Do! Color and Light Discovery Kit {$19.95} at your local Lakeshore Learning store or online at LakeshoreLearning.com! From now until September 4th, you can get 20% off hundreds of favorites and enjoy free shipping on orders of $79 or more.
