An Update on Our Air Situation

So the other day while my brain was being fried by the insane heat in our house, I posted about how our air kept breaking & asked for your insight as to the problem. I was totally surprised by how many people replied with ideas- first of all, I had no idea so many things could go wrong with an air conditioner, and secondly I was just so impressed with the knowledge you all hold on the subject! Seriously, you should all be on HGTV for your DIY prowess & know-how!

I thought I’d update you since you were all so kind and I’m sure some of you are wondering if your solution worked. {If you don’t remember the whole story behind it & our trial and error leading up to this point, check out the post from Sunday night!}

So on Monday at 4am when Justin went to work, he reset the fuse. It actually worked that time, so we finally had air conditioning. It was working just fine on Monday, but we had the company come out anyway since it had obviously been broken overnight & we didn’t want that to happen again. They checked it out, and said the same thing- “The unit is in great condition, there’s no reason this should be happening.” Thanks for the help, guys.

They did have one idea- the unit is as old as the house {almost 15 years old} and sometimes the older units can have wiring that just kind of, “goes out”. That sounds weird to me {and like a potential fire hazard} but I digress. The guy said he had to order a part & it’d be here Wednesday.

Our air worked perfectly for the next couple of days, and it was beautiful.

Then on Wednesday evening around 5, the guy came back & replaced the wiring. The unit turned right back on when he was done with no problems. Until thirty minutes later, when it broke again. It was doing the same thing- the fuse kept popping after twenty or so minutes every time. We tried calling the company but they were closed for the evening, so it was HOT in here again that night. I reset it before I went to bed at 12:30 & finally it stuck, and it stayed on.

We called back the next morning & by that afternoon, the guy was back. He was wracking his brain trying to think of what it could be, when he thought of the electric box. Technically he wasn’t allowed to mess with it, but his field manager said he could to save us {&them!} trouble. Sure enough, the wires were VERY loose- he got four turns out of them in the box & even a couple of turns at the unit itself. So was that it?

Well, our air hasn’t gone out again since, so I think so- although last time it took a few days too. But this makes the most sense and explains why no one else could figure it out by looking at the unit. So I have my fingers crossed!

Thanks again for all of your input & ideas- I did run them ALL past the guy when we were brainstorming what the problem was. &If this doesn’t fix it, I still have a list of things to try, which makes me feel better!

Here’s to a cool, cool Summer!

  1. Something similar happened to us, but with our heater. It was in the middle of winter (things like this always happen at the worst time, right?!) and it kept going out. My husband would be able to fix it, and then it would stop again. It turned out the wires were loose! I hope your a/c is fixed for good and you don’t have to deal with it being out anymore…
