So last week, I shared with you the stories of the first three cars I owned. Today, you get to meet cars 4-6!
Car #4: The Malibu
After the incident with the New Yorker, I was out a car for over a year. I had spent almost all of my money on that car & being 17, I had no credit to go finance a new one. On that note, I didn’t have a job, either. When I graduated high school, I got a job, but with all of my other bills {rent, cell phone, groceries, clothes, oh yeah & college tuition} it wasn’t exactly affordable. So Justin came to the rescue &paid the down payment for me to get a car {after having to be my chauffer for my first semester of college}. I ended up with a ‘98 Chevy Malibu and despite hating the champagne color of it, I loved the car. It was clear, it was nice, it was younger than me {so was the Camaro, but that only lasted a month} &it ran great. Until it blew up.
The night before Halloween, a couple of years after I bought the car, I got all dressed up as Dorothy Gale & headed to my friend’s dorm room to meet up to go out. We hit a couple of parties for a few minutes & then when those turned out to be lame, we went to The Strip & walked around for awhile. Finally I was exhausted & decided to go home. As I was driving home, I noticed my car started to make a weird sound. Less than a minute later, smoke started coming from the hood. I immediately pulled over- on the ramp leading from one freeway to another, no less- turned the car off, got out, and called 911. I had seen WAY too many movies where the car exploded so I was not taking any chances. After giving them the wrong location twice {I was panicked!} a fire truck finally came, and said my car had overheated. The car wasn’t safe to drive so I called a tow truck & the firemen gave me a ride home, all the while commenting on my ruby slippers.
When I got it home, we called a mobile repairman, who told me it would cost thousands to fix the damage done to the inside. I couldn’t afford it, so that was the end of that car.
Car #5: The Maxima
After the Malibu, Justin bought me another car {technically, I had made all of the payments on the Malibu, but he did fork over the required 20% down payment}. We bought it in cash from a coworker who had upgraded &it worked well enough. It had some bumps & dents but really, it wasn’t horrible. After about a year & a half though, it started giving us signs that it was about to die. So we took preemptive measures & traded it in before getting stuck with a hefty repair bill like we would have with the Malibu.
Car #6: The Sonata
This is my current car, and by far the best I’ve owned. It’s not without it’s flaws, but it has no serious damage, and I really can’t complain. After visiting Toyota’s headquarters in February, I do wish that I had a Toyota- both for the quality of the vehicles I drove and for what I know about their company- but until this one blows up, gets stolen, or gets totaled, this is what I have.
Anyone know how to make an overheated engine look like an accident?

7 Days Left
Last Day!

Wow, what bad luck with cars! I have only had 3 and I am 34. I had the first for a few years but I totalled it in an accident, then the second I drove until it had 120K miles on it and was literally falling apart – and I’ve been driving my Saturn Vue now for 6 years without an issue. I really wish Saturn hadn’t gone out of biz, I’d drive them for the rest of my life!

I grew up with Saturns- my mom had one that we had for YEARS until she upgraded it, and even then she had the next one for a LONG time! They really were good cars.
I almost bought a Hyundai Sonata when I bought my last car. Instead I bought a Prius, which I absolutely love!

You made the right choice!
My very first car was a Hyundai. I drove it forever and then sold it to someone we knew. 19 years later and it is still going!

Wow, that’s a long time! Guess I’m not getting a new car anytime soon.
I hope you will get ‘lucky’ and yours will not last near that long.

Yeah, I think this one is going to be around for awhile, even though I *really* want a different one. It’s a decent car though, so it works.
I just recently found your blog and love it already! Great giveaways, stories, and ideas! I am adding you to my blog roll.
And I hope you luck with cars gets better… I have been there!
