My Unfortunate Car History: Part 1

I’ve gone through a lot of cars for a 23 year old who didn’t even get their license until 17 & then had to surrender it for a year in high school because I couldn’t afford the insurance. I mean, a lot of cars. But really, it’s not my fault…

Car #1: The Ghettomobile
It’s a rite of passage {unless you’re Justin, who started out with a Camaro} that your first car has to be a hunk of junk. Mine was no exception as I inherited my Mom’s ‘87 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser Station Wagon. It was dark brown, you had to roll the windows down manually, it had a tape player, and it was older than I was. I was grateful to have a car, but I hated driving that thing to the high school I went to, which happened to be the one all of the rich kids {and I} went to. While my friends were driving around brand new Toyotas & VW Bug Convertibles, I had that. I went out of my way to make jokes about my car so no one else would, but as happy as I was to have a car, I was definitely embarrassed by my ride. {Keep in mind, I was also 17.}

Car #2: The Camaro
When my Dad decided to get the new Chevy Cobalt my senior year of high school, I was thrilled. I didn’t care about the Cobalt one bit, but I knew I’d get my Dad’s hand-me-down Camaro. Having grown up with Camaros, and having a boyfriend {Justin} who drove one, I was pretty excited to get one of my own. Plus, it was fire engine red & actually had a CD player and electric windows! It also had a huge problem: the engine would randomly turn itself off. While in motion. Despite this, my parents let me drive that death trap and sold the station wagon. Less than a month later, the Camaro was totaled. It actually had nothing to do with the engine shutting off & everything to do with the drunk husband of one of the teachers at my school T-boneing me as I was headed home one day. But the damage to the car was more than it was worth, so the insurance company cut us a check for two grand & I no longer had a car.

Car #3: The New Yorker
After several months without a car {there aren’t a lot of options when you only have $2000 and you’re not old enough to finance} I finally caught a break: one of my friends was selling his Chrysler New Yorker for $750 cash. I went to see the car & after driving up & down the street in it, I decided to get it. I was desperate at that point and it had a speaker system, so I overlooked all of the “little” things that were wrong about it. We made arrangements for him to drop it off at my house & I took out the cash. The next day, we needed to get it serviced, so my dad got in it to drive it to the auto body shop. It was then that we realized just how beat the car really was. My mom wouldn’t even let me drive in it &so we left it at the car shop & told the guy working there to fix it as needed {my Dad was a repeat customer and considered him a friend}. We called regularly to check on the status & were always told he’d be “getting to it” soon. After a month, we found out the stereo system had been stolen from it. A month after that, the car mysteriously disappeared. &I didn’t even get to drive it after that first spin around the block.

Stay tuned for cars 4-6!

    You have got to be kidding me?! That doesn’t seem like the guy was a good friend to your dad at all! I have had a few cars in my day too, kinda unlucky on a few….one actually locked up and I went off the road!

  4. Yep. Looks like you’ve been through a few cars. I’ve been through a few myself but was most proud of the very first car I got on my own. It was a brown Nissan Sentra I got from an Auction. Boy did I love that car.

    My first car was a Nissan Maxima. My parents hadn’t planned on getting me a car at 16 but my mom got t-boned right in front of my school picking me up one day. She figured insurance would just total it, so they bought a car from my uncle. Well, it was my lucky day – insurance decided to fix it and I got my first car!!

      Okay this is just weird- Car #5 for me was a Nissan Maxima & then as I said in car 2′s story, I was t-boned right in front of school. Such weird coincidences!

  6. Your story sounds all too familiar to my own… I didn’t get my license til I was 18 and I honestly have lost track of how many cars I have been through.. there have been many a accident – but only 3 were my fault, hehe. Really this deserved a blog post, LOL.

    Oh my goodness, there’s more?! What a mess. I can’t believe they stole your sound system!

    I’m 32 and on my 2nd car. The first was a 1988 Toyota Camry that I LOVED! It would probably still be working if the stupid people at Valvoline hadn’t left off the oil cap when they did my oil change. I finally had to give it up after 205,000 miles. My husband (fiance at the time) surprised me with a 2001 Camry. I’ve been driving it since. It has almost 135,000 miles but hasn’t needed any major work done. I love it!

    Of course there was the Chevy Lumina that my Dad would let me drive before the Camry. It was brand new, but a lemon. It was always in the shop. The steering would go out while you were driving! It was so scary, especially to a 16 year old.
