Since I started staying home last month, I’ve been doing what I call “light homeschooling” with Shane. He’s not quite 3, so instead of sticking to a set curriculum or schedule, we learn through play, observation & experience. He does do worksheets & “school-work” type things too, but only because he LOVES them, and they’re actually like play for him. But mostly, we use educational tools that let us play & learn at the same time.

We’ve been working on a pet theme & so one of our favorite activities has been playing veterinarian! We received a great doctor set from Learning Resources & now almost every day he wants to play with it- sometimes he’ll work on Daddy or me, but usually he works on his stuffed animals {like Patches, his patient shown here} as a vet!

He starts by checking his heart…

&Then his floppy ears…

&Then checks his temperature! Apparently today it’s red- this puppy needs a shot, stat!

As you can see {by the large amount of bandages on Patches}, he has LOTS of practice giving shots!

Then it’s time for the most important part- the great big hug!!

The kit comes with a syringe, stethoscope, thermometer, ear scope & bandage- and it all stores in a little vinyl kit with super convenient handles that are just the right size for little hands! We added some cotton balls & additional bandages since Shane likes to cover his patients with them.
The tools are all made with strong plastic, so I have no fear of him breaking anything- but the plastic is still soft enough that it’s still easy for him to manipulate. He can do everything by himself- from twisting the thermometer to pumping the syringe, which makes it a great activity for him to do with or without me.
This kit is SO much better than the one I had as a kid {you know the one- yellow handles, tools that broke into pieces the first time you took them out & then needed to be duct-taped} and I have a lot of fun playing with Dr. Shane!
