A Picky Eating Epiphany! #FeedingMagic

Thanks to Plum Organics for sponsoring my post about tips for baby feeding magic. What if you let baby choose what’s for dinner? Check out their cute “Quest for Yum!” video and see what happens!

Shane gets a lot of things from me: his blue eyes, his curly hair, his love of a good cuddle. Sadly, he also gets my picky eating tendencies. At two, Shane is still quite picky- but when he was about seven months old, he was so picky that I was worried.

When I started Shane on baby food, I did a lot of research to find out what exactly a baby’s menu needed to consist of. Some said ¼ cup of vegetables, some said 1/3, but they ALL said that babies needed to eat cereal every single day. The only problem? Shane hated cereal. Loathed it. In the video above, we’re laughing at his reactions- and they WERE funny- but only the first time. When it became apparent that he was not going to “get used to” the cereal, I panicked.

I went back online & tried to find alternatives for cereal, but since he was so young, there wasn’t much that he was even allowed to eat. In the meantime, he loved eating fruits and even some vegetables, and could always be counted on to polish off a whole container of yogurt. That’s when it hit me: we could mix the food that he DID like in with the food that he DIDN’T like, to sort of “trick” him into eating the cereal!

It worked like a charm. We started with yogurt & shifted to using food pouches since we were just using about half of one per bowl of cereal, and they could easily be closed & put back in the fridge for the next day. The pouches quickly became a favorite of both Shane & I.

&Those food pouches have continued to help me trick Shane into eating: When he was about a year old, he wouldn’t eat from his bowls because he knew that there was cereal in them. So to mix the foods together, I’d just dip the spoon into the bowl first, but then I’d let him watch me squeeze some food out of the pouch & onto the spoon for him. He was none the wiser.

&Even now, when he’s refusing to eat his fruit or vegetables, I just pull out the big drawer of food pouches that I keep for him, &allow him to choose his own. Since Shane’s new phase is that of the “BY MYSELF!!!!” variety, this is a great way for me to let him feel like he’s making his own decisions, while making sure that he’s still making the right ones and not eating cookies all day.

Each stage has brought with it a new food challenge- but we can always count on Plum Organics food pouches for some Feeding Magic!
