Go. The Eff. To Sleep.

So Shane’s not a good sleeper.

He never has been.

Sure, he sleeps for a 12-14 hour stretch at night. But he’s always- ALWAYS woken up crying & screaming every half hour to hour from the time he goes to bed until the time I go lay next to him to go to bed as well.

It’s ensured that I keep cosleeping with him, which I don’t mind, but it’s a pain in the butt when I’m trying to get work done & I get interrupted every 30 minutes.

The last month or so, he’s kind of tapered off on the waking up thing- sometimes he’ll wake up & let out one cry or “PLEASE!” but then he usually gets himself back to sleep. But he didn’t learn a new skill of self-soothing, I just put him to bed next to Hubby now so when he rolls over all upset, he knows there’s someone there. Yeah, I totally tricked him.

But now that I’ve figured that out, we have had another problem- he’s been staying up WAY. TOO. LATE.

He’s always had a later bedtime- I start storytime at 8:15-8:30 & lights out fifteen minutes later. When he was little, it’d be a struggle to get him to fall asleep. For the last six months or so, he’s been passing out in 30-45 minutes. But every night this week, it’s taken him over TWO HOURS to fall asleep.

TWO. HOURS.

That means he’s been going to bed at 10:30 or later every night, and yet he’s still waking up at his normal time in the morning. &It’s become a vicious cycle:

I know what I need to do &that’s break the cycle. So I’m hoping this weekend will change something up & “reset” him- but at the very least, he’ll be in for a rude awakening {no pun intended} next week when I start working 3 days a week & he has to get up at 7am instead of 10:30. Which means nap time will be closer to 11:30 than 2:30. &Bedtime? Let’s just say I’m excited for bedtime.

&Now, just for giggles, I present to you the funniest book ever- now narrated by Samuel L. Jackson!

Ps. Thanks to my Aunt Cindy for sharing this with me after hearing of my conundrum- it’s at least given me a laugh out of my sleep deprivation! :)

Have you ever had sleep issues with your child{ren}? How did you fix it? Do you have any resources or tips you’d recommend? Please share them so I can sleep again!

Powder Room Makeover: Part 1 {Featuring #GliddenTesters!}

So three weeks ago marked the one-year anniversary of us moving into our home. I’ve lived in apartments my whole life until now, so I was so excited to be in a house, where we could hang pictures without worrying about getting our deposit back & paint the walls with wreckless abandon. Yet, in a year, we’ve painted a total of one room. &That one room was our master bedroom- literally the smallest room in the house, and the one that no one else sees, ever. &We still haven’t hung a single picture.

It’s time for that to change.

Now that I am going back to work part-time, we’re going to spend some time & money on making our house a home. &We’re starting with the room I hate the most- the powder room/laundry room!

There are a lot of reasons I hate this room:

-It’s always covered in laundry, which is annoying enough, but since it’s the first room you see when you enter our house, it’s especially unfortunate.

-The toilet paper roll is broken: completely torn off of the wall. &Since we have been talking about painting the room {for a year}, Hubby didn’t want to install a new one & then have to dismantle it again to paint. So now whenever people come over, there’s an awkward moment where I have to tell them that the toilet paper is in the basket behind them.

-Just like the rest of the house, it’s very… blah. It’s painted a safe, neutral tan color & reminds me of the plain white walls I’ve always had in apartments.

So the time has come to give it a makeover! So, for the record, here are the before photos! {&Yes, I’m aware of how messy it is, and I considered straightening up for the sake of photos. BUT, then I realized you’d never fully grasp the huge difference that we’re about to make in there without seeing how it really looks most of the time.}

Our sink, with the hamper to the left of it- that hamper was Hubby’s as a kid. Functional, but not attractive. Also pictured: my one attempt at decorating the room- a little black bird & a candle holder shaped like a nest that’s supposed to have a little turquoise egg candle in it, but Shane hid it somewhere. Apparently, he thought it was Easter.

The hideous & incredibly stained blinds & our about-to-fall-apart towel rack. NOT pictured: the toilet paper roll. Because it doesn’t exist.

The mess on my washer & on the shelf above it. I love our washer & dryer and want them to be featured proudly, not hidden under this clutter! &I hate the dead space next to the washer- I could be putting it to use!

It’s a small room with not a lot of room for photo-taking, so this is the best “whole room” picture I could get. So, a tiny room, functioning as a powder room AND laundry room, with no organization & no sense of personal style.

No wonder I hate this room.

So as the first step toward changing my feelings about the room, we went to Walmart to pick up some paint testers! You can view my shopping experience on the slideshow below!

On Sunday morning, we used all three testers on the wall. The Glidden Testers are really cool because they have a built-in brush, which means you don’t have to pay for multiple brushes that you use for a minute or two & then throw away. It also means no pouring, which should mean no messes, but I totally made a mess. On my second paint stroke, I totally dripped paint all over the trash can- the only thing in the room we weren’t going to replace. My bad. Hubby made me let him paint after that.

Even so, the testers made it really easy to make sure we were happy with the color we chose before committing to it!

So here are the color testers on the wall- I think they each have their pros & cons. The one on the left, Rich Navy, is a beautiful color, but it’s really dark & that room doesn’t get much light to balance it. The middle one, Deepest Aqua, is really pretty and is totally “my style”, but Hubby thinks it’s a little too girly. &The one on the right, Steel Blue, is actually pretty purple.

What do you think? Which one should we go with?

We’re going back this weekend to buy a full-sized can of paint, &we’re having a hard time deciding since any of those are such a drastic change from the paint throughout the rest of our house! I’m excited to have a pretty, tranquil blue room but since the rest of the house is bland & tan, I’m afraid it won’t flow. So let me know which one you like the best & help me decide!

Also, if you’ve been putting off painting your house for awhile, now’s the time! Until the 30th, you can pick up a Glidden paint tester for under a buck! {94 cents to be exact if you live in Vegas- as low as 47 cents in most of the country!} The paint testers retail for $2.47-$2.94 but there’s a couple out that you can use to get $2 off one- just click on the photo below, print your coupon{s} & head to your local Walmart for some testers!

Stay tuned for Part 2 of the makeover!

It’s an Ice Cream Party! {&Recipe!} #FirstStreetIceCream

So, in case you haven’t noticed, it’s Summer. &I live in Vegas. So to say that it’s HOT would be an understatement. So last week, I hosted an ice cream party for some of our friends! It was a lot of fun, and so was setting up for it since I like to be particular about details!

Over the weekend, Hubby, Shane & I headed out to Smart & Final to pick up the ingredients we’d need: appetizers, toppings & of course, ice cream!

I designed these water bottle labels to go with the party theme & wrapped the bottles in them. I was surprised at how easy it was to make them!

I wrapped up some Ice Cream Cone bubbles for everyone to take home with them- this was the ONLY thing for the whole party that I didn’t get at Smart & Final!

I set out a buffet of toppings in baking cups- it took forever but not only did it turn out cute, but it made it easy for everyone to grab what they wanted & just sprinkle it onto their ice cream!

We had triple the syrup: Chocolate, Caramel & Strawberry

&Of course, sprinkles!

Then it was time to party!

We snacked on some pizza rolls & Chex Mix
{Yes, I made my friends feed their kids pizza & ice cream for lunch. It happens.}

Then it was time for ice cream! Yay!

Everyone helped themselves to whatever toppings they wanted- there were some really creative combinations!

Shane had a chocolate beard but he didn’t let that stop him from hitting on the ladies!

*********************
So like I said, there were some really interesting combinations- I never would have thought to mix Heath bar with coconut! I made a S’Mores Sundae and it was so good I just had to share it:

Ingredients:

-First Street Ice Cream: Vanilla or Chocolate
-One Graham Cracker
-First Street Mini-Marshmallows
-Hot Fudge

Directions:

1. Put the graham cracker into a plastic bag and seal it. Use the jar of hot fudge to crush it up into crumbs

2. Put the hot fudge in the microwave

3. Scoop your ice cream

4. Sprinkle the graham cracker crumbs and mini-marshmallows onto the ice cream

5. Use a spoon to drizzle hot fudge on top- and don’t forget to lick the hot fudge off the spoon!

*********************

For this party, we used mostly First Street products, which is Smart & Final’s brand. We used First Street sprinkles, syrups, toppings, and even ice cream! Nothing tasted “cheap” – even though it definitely was!

&Right now, First Street is hosting a really great giveaway, simply visit the First Street Ice Cream site and enter to win! There will be 5 $100 SmartCash card winners weekly PLUS  there will be 3 grand prizes of either an ice cream party for each Grand Prize Winner and fifty (50) of their family members and friends or Gift Card in the amount of $1,000!

So, check out the contest & if you win? Invite me to your ice cream party!

Susie’s Note: I received product & compensation for this campaign. Opinions & experiences are all my own! &By the way, you can check out Smart & Final on Facebook or Twitter!
