Marie Callender’s Pot Pies: Better Than Homemade? {Review}

I have a confession: Until today, I’d never eaten a pot pie.

I don’t like pie- apple, cherry, whatever. Now, I know pot pies are WAY different, but I’m stubborn, so I never tried them. Well, there’s that, and there’s the fact that they look SUPER hard to make! I like to cook for my family, but I’m {Not Quite} Susie Homemaker for a reason- when things get complicated, it’s best to leave it to the professionals.

So when I was offered the chance to review Marie Callender’s Pot Pies, I have to admit I was nervous. Having never had a pot pie before, I was afraid I wouldn’t like it, and would then have to post a negative review- something I HATE to do. But, my mom always told me to try new foods so I accepted!

Now, Marie Callender’s Pot Pies recently were included in an article that listed 8 convenience foods that are better than their homemade counterparts {8 Grocery Store Products that are Better than Homemade (really)}. With a compliment like that, I was excited to see how good it really was!

The first thing I did was go to Target, where I picked up a chicken pot pie for $2.47. TWO FORTY SEVEN. I was already happy with the product based on the price, but it was time to take it home for the real test: the taste test!

The pot pie was super easy to make- rather than cooking chicken, making gravy, making veggies & the scariest part-making a crust- all I had to do was open the carton & put it in the microwave. I didn’t even have to take it out of the carton- in fact, you CAN’T take it out of the carton! It has a special cooking thing on the inside. Don’t ask me to explain it- all I know is it’s shiny.

First I put it in for 6 minutes on high, then 7 minutes on 50%. Normally I’m too impatient for meals that take THAT long, even though it’s really only a fraction of the time I’d have spent making it myself or putting it in the oven. So I was neutral on that part.

I took it out of the microwave & it looked and smelled delish. It seemed like forever before it was cool enough to eat- but that’s just because I wanted it really bad at this point! I was starving, and even though I still wasn’t sure if I’d like it, it did look amazing. &According to the box, the crust is made from scratch. Ooooh.

So, did I like it? No.

I LOVED IT. {I know, I know, that’s an old &overused joke. But my dad said it all the time growing up so I feel like I can still pull it off.}

But seriously, I loved it. The crust was flaky and delicious, the meat was tender & not dried out {like many microwave meals tend to be}, the veggies weren’t mushy & the crust was delicious. Oh, I said that already? I’ll say it again: the crust was DELICIOUS.

So are Marie Callender’s Pot Pies better than homemade? Having never tasted a homemade pot pie, I can still say that yes, they are. Why?

-I actually made it. The chances of me making a homemade pot pie are slim to none because of all the work involved. So Marie Callender’s Pot Pies are a great option for us since Hubby {&Now I!} love pot pies & would otherwise not be able to have them.

-There was literally no clean up- I just threw the box away & put my fork in the dishwasher & I was set! If I’d made a pot pie, I’d have a pie dish, a saucepan, and at least one skillet to clean- let alone the plates we’d eat it off of, the forks we’d use, and the many stirring spoons & spatulas that would be required. My dishwasher is grateful.

-It was truly delicious. Without even making a pot pie, I can guarantee that the pot pie I ate was a lot better than any homemade one that I could have made. Maybe Bree VanDeKamp can do better, but until she moves off of Wisteria Lane &onto my street, I’m going to be making Marie Callender’s pot pies a regular addition to our meal plan!

So there you have it! I no longer hate ALL pies {just those of the dessert variety} &I found a new meal for my family to enjoy together!

Have you ever had Marie Callender’s Pot Pies? What did you think? Are they better than homemade?

Susie’s Note:
I received a free pot pie & a stipend from Marie Callender’s & TheMotherhood in exchange for my honest opinion. Per usual, this did not affect my opinion- although it did allow me to finally try a pot pie!
